I was surprised when I started playing again just how few monks are running around these days. Its a shame because that class used to be pwn.
That's because most monks have retired or are playing other classes now. Bottom line is, monks aren't a needed class. For groups or raids. Especially at the high end of things.
Monks use to offer 3 things:
1. Pulling. No one was consistantly better/safer at pulling than a good monk. When someone needed a puller, monks were at the top of the list, in most cases.
Thanks to the changes in lull/pac line(which was great for other classes, like paladins) and the simple fact that so damn many mobs CAN be lulled, monks were dropped as puller of choice. So much so that there are people who have never seen or even knew monks were good at pulling.
What use to take "real" game skills to safely pull, can now be done by any moron with the ability to lull/pac. So much for being challenged by the game.
2. Monks use to be gods of DPS thanks to high damage to ratio weapons that were almost exclusively monk-only weapons. The tranquil staff was just unreal back then. And it was practically priceless.
But other classes caught up and surpassed monks in this department. In both raid gear and bazaar gear. Now all melee classes could have weapons that had higher damage than delay. And most, if not all, have far more choices in said weapons. Even when there are decent monk weapons available, like the SoFW, the price is insane compared to other melee weapons of similiar design.
Once again monks lose.
3. Tanking/tank mezzing mobs for groups.
Then the "nerf" was added to the mixture. Because of a bunch of crybaby warriors couldn't STFU about it, Sony decided to screw over monks by ruining their damage mitigation. In a way that ONLY effects monks. Not druids or beastlords, both of whom also wear leather. Just monks.
Monks use to make damn good rampage tanks and were excellent at off tanking adds when needed. Not any more. Oh sure, monks can still off-tank most PoP or earlier era mobs, assuming they are geared with the top of the line equipment. Which most aren't.
Besides the above mentioned examples, the nerf crippled monks solo abilities to the extreme. This ruined play time for a lot of monks.
I'm sure there are other reasons I'm not thinking off at the moment, but those are the 3 big reasons why you don't see many monks running around. Including me...
