I have 13 preordered and am just finishing up the first Mass Effect in time to play it. I've purposely not read anything about 13 to keep my mind a clean slate when I start playing. I just hope that it meets my expectation of quality that an FF game should have.

I don't see how anyone could not prefer 6 to the rest. Maybe 7, since it was decent, but 6 still wins. 7 to me was like the "Black Album" of Final Fantasy. Honestly though, I've enjoyed every single game though. They're still a cut above most jRPG games, but I felt that after 8 the series has lacked heart. No plot point, characters or goals I could relate to. Extremely linear gameplay, which doesn't bother me if the story has me hooked like 4 and 6 did.
At this rate, the only way final fantasy will be back at the top would be to base their main character after Bruce Willis and make the central antagonist a terrorist or white collar criminal =p

Might be interesting. Or might be terribad.

Drem wrote:seven is so great because its bleak and desolate atmosphere and plethora of non-linear things that you can do. it has nothing to do with the storyline, tho it was rather unique, and everything to do with the fact that every ff game before it was as linear as an rpg could be. I can't breed animals or hit the casino or spawn materia or anything remotely as cool as that other than grinding levels in the other games. not to mention it's most certainly the longest and has the most secrets.
if we're strictly talking about storyline then I vote 4 or 1. I never beat or even got close to beating 6. I was a chrono trigger/secret of mana boy except for ff 1 and 4 which I played religiously

is easily explained by this statementDrem wrote:I never beat or even got close to beating 6.
because once you get the airship there is tons of shit to do that doesn't directly relate to the storyline and can be done in any order, but that's not until the second half of the game

Yeah the reference was to Metallica =P
That reference means different things to different people as there are people out there who think the black album sucks. For me, it's a great album, but it marked the end of an era of greatness for Metallica just as FF7 is a great game that marked the end of an era of greatness for Final Fantasy.
Some people argue that 9 was an amazing game and while I did appreciate the "throwback" feel of it, it really had no impact whatsoever. There was nothing new and innovative. Nothing that sticks out in my mind. You don't hear people lauding Zidane, Kuja and Garnet like they do Cloud, Sephiroth and Aeris; Cecil, Kain, Golbez and Rosa; or Locke, Terra, Celes and Kefka. Even that lameass Squall is more memorable than ANY character in 9.
There's always been the age old debate of which is better between 6 and 7. Personally, I vote 6, but 7 is such a great game that I don't think anyone is retarded for picking 7. Hell, people who have never played FF7 know that Aeris died and who Sephiroth is. That game had a crazy impact in the gaming world and set the standard for games across the board with graphics, gameplay and use of FMV and CGI graphics. 7 was VERY linear until the last CD in which it gave you a few things to do. Breeding Chocobo, exploring Gelnika, beating 2 crazy hard bosses, collecting goods from Gold Saucer etc etc. I think as far as most non linear FF game, that goes to 6 hands down. The world gets destroyed halfway through the game, and you're left with so many different options and you can take any route to get to the end where you face Kefka. At the halfway point in 6, you have the option to climb Fanatics Tower (magic only tower), fight Doomgaze, fight the 8 ancient dragons, explore the ruins under Figaro, Save Mog from Narshe, find Umaro and Gogo, enter Cyan's nightmare in Doma, save Locke from the Phoenix Cave, battle at the Colosseum, find Sabin's master, rescue Shadow, and of course, level up in dinosaur forest.
I guess thinking more about it, I'd say 6 is a better game, because there's more to do and explore but FF7 definitely has way more "moments" that are extremely memorable and elements that are incredibly innovative. Like...I remember landing my airship near Midgar waiting for the Godzilla looking weapon to walk towards me to fight. That shit was insane. After that battle, chasing him all around the world and repeatedly fighting him. Aeris dying was like a huge shock for me. Something about that scene made me realize there wasn't a phoenix down option and that she's definitely dead. That the player was meant to feel that loss.
In both 6 and 7, I wanted to stop Kefka and Sephiroth. I could relate to the character's plights and see their motivation in doing what they do. It was simple. Good vs. evil. Every character that drove the storyline had their flaws, but the main plot was strong enough to get past that. It was opposite of FF8. I could give 2 shits about Balamb Garden and that emo shitbag Squall and his pseudo gay love triangle with Seifer and what's her face. Eyes on Me didn't even make sense. FF8 was a game based on love and no one in the game once said they loved anyone else. Don't even get me started on how much I wanted to punch that dude Zell in the face. Oh and the whole, "Btw guys, remember that one time we grew up together and the crazy witch lady was our nanny? Yeah, the summon monsters made us forget that...".
In the end, 4, 6 and 7 had plenty of heart and great characters that drove the great storyline and had amazing gameplay systems. 8 was an emo mess of stupid fangirl serving plot and ridiculous plot holes meant to make the stupid think the game was "deep". Seriously, the only way FF8 could have been gayer was if Squall was a vampire and his last name was Cullen. FF9 was a breath of fresh air in the first half which turned into a giant cocktease in the end. It's like courting a hot chick and finally taking her home only to realize that while she may be hot and reminds you of a hot ex gf, she's not half the lay your ex was and basically you're left having to finish yourself off before your boner goes limp from her terrible dead fish sex skills.
Final Fantasy nowadays lacks heart, which is one of my main concerns for 13. I don't want characters who's lives are totally overrun by emotional issues from beginning to end. At least Cloud conquers his issues in time for you to kick Sephiroth's ass. Give me some characters who have a reason to fight bad guys and a plot I can relate to. Give me some bad guys I want to see die, and some characters I'd be happy to kill them with and Final Fantasy will have the "heart" it had from back in the day.
