The Bible and the errors within - A (long) religious post.

Let's throw things at them!

BTW, as for flying and how that developed, saw a show on dinosaur evolution the other day that has a pretty good explanation for it. Apparently, a lot of the raptor type dinosaurs were actually developing feathers for quite a while. (utahraptor, velociraptor, etc.) Also, the way their skeletons were set up, the motion they used to spring their claws forward to grab something is almost exactly the same motion a bird uses to swing its wings forward as part of the flight motion. So, if you have feathered arms, swinging forward in a flight-type motion, not too far fetched to go from that to using that to get longer jumps, to gliding, to true flight, given several million years.

Now, as for the bible again. Some stuff for our apparently departed christian arguing partner. First, I at least never called you a retard, not once, go look at my posts. Now, some questions:

1) Why is god creating the universe by means of the big bang somehow incompatible with the bible?

2) How is saying "god is the spark that caused the random amino acids created by lightning striking the primordial soup of the oceans to recombine into the beginnings of life, which led via his mechanism of evolution, eventually to allthe birds, beasts, plants and man" also somehow incompatible with the bible? (not that I believe that's how it happened, but I certainly can't disprove that or argue against it scientifically.)

3) Do you believe that earth was created in 4004 BC, as figured out by some bishop a long time ago, by tracing back the lifespans and dates in all the who begat who stuff in the bible?

4) If Adam and Eve really existed, and Kane and Abel were their first 2 children, where did all the people come from that Kane went out among when he was banished from Eden for killing his brother? Shouldn't those 4 have been the only people on earth?

5) What's wrong with Carbon dating? And you DO know there's other radiological dating methods in use besides just carbon dating, to allow us to date rocks?

6) How do you explain dinosaur skeletons, homo erectus skeletons, australopithicus skeletons, hell, how about wooly mammoth skeletons or frozen corpses like you could see about on the discovery channel, that was dated to 20,000 years old?

7) Similarly to the last question, assuming literal creationism, and earth starts in 4004 BC, how do you explain 25,000 year old cave paintings and those temples in Malta that were built in 6-7000 BC?

8) How about life on other planets? Never mentioned in the bible, how'd that get started, or is there none but here?

9) If the bible is "god's word", how do you explain the mis-translations? Like the whole "parting of the red sea" thing, when if you look back at earlier greek version, it should be REED sea (ie, a tidal marsh). How many other errors and inaccuracies do we NOT know about?

10) Again if the bible is "god's word", how do you explain the fact that it was men, many with political agendas, that decided at 2 vatican councils which books would be *IN* the bible? Check out the Apocrypha and Pseudopygrypha (sp?). Those are the collected books that many thought SHOULD be in the bible, but didn't have enough votes to be included.

11) If the jewish slaves fleeing egypt really spent 40 years wandering around the sinai desert trying to reach Israel, why is there NO archaeological evidence whatsoever for any such thing? Deserts are great preservers of man's detritus; in the mojave today you can see tank tracks that look fresh, but were really made in the 1940s by US tank troops preparing to go to North Africa. Yet, in all that area there's no evidence of that many people living there for that long. none. (also, how in hell does it take 40 years to go from one side of Sinai up to Israel? It's what, 200 miles tops? Talk about a SERIOUSLY lousy sense of direction.)

12) What gives christians the right to go out and prosletyze and force their beliefs on others? And yes, it's almost invariably christians doing this. You don't see buddhist missionaries going to africa to convert the natives, nor hindu, nor shintoist, nor jewish, nor even islamic really. People of those other religions believe in their correctness as fervently as you do in yours, so what gives christians the right to try and impose THEIR will on other people?

So, there you go. 12 simple questions. If you have data and evidence to support your claims, by all means, bring it, I want to see it. You may not convince me, but I definitely want to see what you have to back up your claims. If you DON'T, well, it just looks like you don't really have anything, you just can't answer the tough questions and fled rather than having to try. So please, I'm waiting for your response here.

Where to start? Here's as good a place as any:

****ARLOS MEDIA NEWS FLASH****

The Big Bang Theory is no longer a theory.

You heard it here first! Undeniable proof has emerged that the Big Bang is no longer just a goofy theory, but rather a historical fact!

"Yes, the Big Bang really happened", said a reliably source from the NT early yesterday morning.

We now return you to your regularly scheduled program...

You misunderstood. I don't believe that ANY religion has the right to go around prosletyzing. Again: If someone wants to live their life in adherence to the strict rules of their faith, so that their life inspires others to voluntarily come and ask that person about said faith... That's perfectly OK. You (or anyone) going door to door, or to other countries, and prosletyzing either like the jehova's witnesses or the missionaries in 3rd world countries... Now that is flat out, categorically wrong, and should be banned. You have *NO* right to tell other people that their beliefs are wrong, none.
Arlos

Let me get this straight. If Arlos was king, he would forcibly proselytize his beliefs on all of us, while at the same time, telling us that it's wrong to proselytize our beliefs on anyone else?

Arlos, you give new meaning to the word HYPOCRISY. But then again, being a hypocrite is inherent to being a liberal, so it really comes as no surprise.

Adam and Eve weren't Christians.

There were no Christians until Christ was born.

Christ
Christian

Christ
Christian

See the pattern?

You are actually talking about early Judaism.

So you're saying Christianity existed beforee Jesus Christ... but no one knew about it. Doesn't that seem just a teensy bit like a cop out?

woah! adam and eve were runnin around with bibles? news to me.

you are making up your own shit and claiming it's Christianity. That is no different than me making up a bunch of shit and calling it Tossicatholism.

The above quotes were made in regard to Donnel's belief that Christianity is the oldest religion. Take a deep breath and open those closed minds of yours and you might actually understand what it is he's trying to say. You don't have to agree with it, but you should at the very least understand it. Which most of you clearly don't.

Donnel isn't saying that the practice of Christianity began before the birth, death or resurrection(take your pick) of Jesus Christ. Just like the Bible doesn't begin with the birth, death or resurrection(take your pick) of Jesus Christ.

To be a "true Christian", first and foremost, is not to believe in just Jesus. Rather it is to believe in God. The God of the Bible. By believing in God(the Christian God, not the Muslim, Jewish, Budist, Wiccan, etc god), you are a Christian.

And since Adam and Eve believed in God, that makes them "true Christians", which in turn makes Christianity the oldest religion. Satan also believed in God and was a "true Christian". At least until he fell from grace.

Maybe I'm overestimating Donnel's intelligence, but I do believe that was what he meant when he said Christianity was the oldest religion.

I really want to hear how carbon dating and dinasaurs are explained in a creationist view. Anyone care to enlighten this evolutionist?

Assume that life would be found on other planets. Is this a problem for Creationists?

There are many who do not trust carbon testing and have found plenty of holes in it.

Awhile back, an old wheelbarrel(I think that's what it was) was found fossilized in a creek bed. More than likely it was abandoned back in the gold rush days. Minerals from the water were pushed into it over the years, causing it to fossilize. Carbon testing done on it indicated it was millions of years old. Obviously it wasn't.

This and other things similiar are often cited in arguments against carbon testing.

As for life being found on other planets, I really see no problem for Creationists.

First, we know according to the bible that beings(angels, for example) other than God existed before Adam. And we know that God created various animals before he created Adam. Who's to say that God wasn't multi-tasking on other planets? Besides, do you really think God sat around twiddling his thumbs for all of eternity before he made Adam?

What I find far more interesting is that most Atheist/Evolutionist have a hard time believing in other life forms, intelligent lifeforms, outside our planet/universe. This despite the fact that it is ENDLESS out there, in any direction you chose to go.

This is one reason why I don't think of most(I really don't know of any) Atheists/Evolutionists as "true Atheists/Evolutionists". None of you are capable of practicing what you claim to believe in. This has been illustrated time and again on this board.

You speak as if you are Atheists/Evolutionists when it is convenient to do so. But when the discussion turns to morality, poverty, disease, discrimination, famine,...etc, you end up sounding like a bunch of born-again Christians! Or worse.

This is why I say there are no "good" or "true" Atheists/Evolutionists. Especially here.

The very word Christian is taken from Christ and does mean believing that Christ is the true son of God.

There are believers of the OT that are NOT Christians and to try to portray Adam and Eve as Christians is ludicrous.

Belief in God does not automatically translate as belief in Christ.
Inside each person lives two wolves. One is loyal, kind, respectful, humble and open to the mystery of life. The other is greedy, jealous, hateful, afraid and blind to the wonders of life. They are in battle for your spirit. The one who wins is the one you feed.

Phantomfist,

You speak many words but say nothing.

You are saying what YOU believe being a "real" Christian is but you don't even understand your own beliefs enough to make a decent argument. What the fuck man? I am not even a christian and I know what the fuck being a christian is. It's believing that Jesus "Christ" is the son of god and humanities savior.

Donnel can believe that he shoots rainbows out his asshole but that does not make his beliefs fact.

Donnel said Christianity is the oldest religion in the world. It's not. END OF STORY. There are FACTS to back this up so Donnel WAS WRONG. See?

Bring some fucking facts to the table or shut the fuck up or better yet, just shut the fuck up.

#1. I never said I believed anything. So the entire first portion of you post is moot. Is your reading comprehension really that poor?

#2. I was simply trying to explain to the ignorant(include yourself here) what I felt Donnel meant by saying that "true Christianity" is the oldest religion.

Again, you don't have to agree with what he believes. But you should try to understand how he arrived at his beliefs. Which is what I was attempting, perhaps successfully, to do.

Until he posts that I was wrong in my depiction of his beliefs, I'll stick by my thesis.

This is my most passionate interest... half of my magazine subscriptions revolve around cosmology, astronomy or theoretical physics. The Big Bang theory is very much a 'theory'. It's actually quite antiquated now... nobody cares about it. The real question is, what happened 'before' the Big Bang? ^_^.

the only one here who is confused is you. we understood what he was saying, and his reasoning. however, it was regoddamtarded. He may see Adam and Eve as christians all he wants. all i see is christianity latching onto an older monotheistic religion, and renaming the Torah the old testament.

You know, I really wish some of those creationist nuts would have clue surgically implanted and realize that just because something is a "theory" doesn't mean that it is somehow off the wall, unsupported, or not accepted as general truth. Yes, the Big Bang is a theory. Evolution is a theory. You know what else are theories? That atoms are made up of protons, neutrons and electrons. That the sun operates by fusing hydrogen into helium. E=mc^2. ALL of those are theories. Guess what: In every single case (including evolution and the Big Bang) we have mountains of physical and observational evidence backing up those theories, and we can observe, either in nature or in experiments, results consistent with predictions made by those theories.

As for calling me a hypocrite, you're mixing reference points. I don't tell you what to believe, you can believe whatever the hell you want. What I AM telling you is that you cannot present belief as scientific fact, nor does ANY religion have the right to go out and try and forcibly convert other people to that religion. Am I trying to convince you to not be a christian, and to go Wiccan? Oh hell no. What I AM telling you is that you don't have the right to come to me and tell me that being Wiccan is wrong, and that I need to convert to christianity. Given the stated importance by Christ in the bible of treating others as you would have them treat you, it would seem to me that CHRISTIANS are the ones being hypocrites, by their one-sided forcing of beliefs. After all, they wouldn't like it if it was done to THEM, right?

Oh, you also neatly ignored my note that carbon dating is by no means the only dating method used. There are others that are used to date the age of rocks as well, beyond carbon-14. Also, you have failed to offer ANY means of explaining away the metric tons of evidence for life and even civilization before 4004 BC, which is when the world began, if you believe in literal creationism. Care to try responding to any of the other 11 points, or too tough for you to conveniently explain away?

You're also wrong about the beliefs of Atheists/Evolutionists. Very wrong. Just about every single science-minded person I know believes there's other life out there in the universe somewhere, likely even intelligent life. Hell, I expect us to find evidence of (likely ancient) life on Mars, and almost certainly on Europa, and that's just our solar system. Believing in other intelligent life, however, does NOT mean we believe that any such extra-terrestrial intelligent life has ever come HERE. Oh, and I'm not an atheist, thanks. Never claimed to be.

Shrug... at least the average Atheist is a lot more 'normal' than your typical Bible-thumping Southern-Baptist.

Example... in my research under the keywords, "Strange Atheists" I discovered the following bit of craziness:

Now... as I delved into the frigid waters of the crazy things that the so-called Christians do... I discovered many MANY examples of peculiarities. I thought ya'll would enjoy this little piece of heaven:

Forgiveness

Postby Gargamellow » Tue May 25, 2004 8:58 pm

"Be excellent to eachother." - Wayne
"Take care of yourselves, and eachother." -Jerry

I believe in the power of love. I believe there is something out there fusing us together. I believe this power is most often called God. I believe in God. I believe that Jesus was an incredible man who understood the importance of loving, sharing...forgiveness. The Bible is a learning tool. I also heard there is a missing book written by a woman who was supposedly Jesus's wife. They say it was cut from the book by the local government. I have no idea if this is true. However it just goes to show you that it is possible we don't know the whole story.

"Do unto others as you would have them do unto you." -Bible

I love you all for filling my deadtime at work with e-meaning!

Buddism does not actually have a god that you pray to. In some schools Buddha himself is worshipped like a man-god. Buddhas own teachings take more of an agnostic approach in the sense that there may be a god or there may be many but they are not important and they can not help you. The answer lies within you and you yourself have to find the answer. Buddha is only a teacher.

Theres an interesting theory about the part in Jeus life which is missing in the bible. Some belive he traveled and studied under some buddist teacher for a while. This would explain why buddism and the new testament are quiet similar in their message of love, do-unto-others.., forgivness etc. Much more similar than the old and new testament.

If Adam and Eve really existed, and Kane and Abel were their first 2 children, where did all the people come from that Kane went out among when he was banished from Eden for killing his brother? Shouldn't those 4 have been the only people on earth?

Where in the bible does it say Cain and Abel are the first two children?

Adam and Eve did not procreate to produce the entire human race. It's a fable.

I am going to make a bible that includes little footnotes that say things like. "This didn't really happen, it's just a metaphor" or "This is an exaggeration to add some drama to the story, please do not take this literally"

I really want to hear how carbon dating and dinasaurs are explained in a creationist view. Anyone care to enlighten this evolutionist?

There are many who do not trust carbon testing and have found plenty of holes in it.

Awhile back, an old wheelbarrel(I think that's what it was) was found fossilized in a creek bed. More than likely it was abandoned back in the gold rush days. Minerals from the water were pushed into it over the years, causing it to fossilize. Carbon testing done on it indicated it was millions of years old. Obviously it wasn't.

This and other things similiar are often cited in arguments against carbon testing.

Howdy.

I would like to put to rest the whole issue of carbon dating here with some hard scientific facts.

Ok, in the Fossilized Barrel above Carbon Dating would NOT have worked on it. Why? Well, you have to look at two things in the process of Carbon Dating. Number one: To carbon date something, something must have Carbon in it. In the above example cabon dating the barrel would have been a process in futility because: It was fossilized (no, it isnt a circular arguement). You see in Fossilization you have what is called atom replacement, each atom in the object is slowly replaced over time with another atom. In the above example the carbon was replaced by some other mineral, probably silica or something else. How do I know this? Because carbon is the building blocks of Earth based life, so carbon would be the mineral (atom) replaced during fossilization otherwise the barrel would have rotted away since about 90% of the barrel is carbon (mass-wise). After fossilization there is no more carbon. Therefore: no more carbon to carbon date.

Now, for the people that say: there is some carbon there so you can do carbon dating. You would be exactly right. However, carbon dating is really just a measure of the remaining amount of carbon 14 in a substance since it breaks down over time (Radioactive decay). The half life is like 5568±30 years (which is the time it takes for Half of the carbon 14 to decay to nitrogen 14). Now, also you have to remember that carbon dating is also a ratio of c-14 to c-12 so the higher amount of c-14 in a substance the YOUNGER it is. Now that ratio of c-14 to c-12 is very important because that ratio can determin how old an organic substance is. With fossilization the carbon is replaced, therefore preventing accurate c14 and c12 ratios because the c12 and c14 in the thing being measured has been replaced by Silica, or something else. It is possible to get a ratio such that there is no c-14 in an object. If there is no c-14, then the object is older than 60000 years old.

Notice that 60000 year threshold? Yah, if you date anything with carbon dating you get a MAXIMUM age so with carbon dating you can not accuratly determine an age of something over 60000 years in age (like a dinosaur, a diamond, etc).

Now, onto the barrel: Getting a date of several million years on the barrel is completely reasonable, if you understand the process of age dating. Which, unfortunately, you dont. Now, using the previous example above the atoms in the barrel were replaced, therefore they got replaced with Something. That something was: another mineral! Yes! Another substance which was probably millions of years old (silica is that old if not longer). So, when they dated the barrel using carbon dating they got a reading of zero (or older than 60000 years) and then had to go to another method to date it which gave a reading of millions of years.

Actually, I remember this barrel problem. Its actually an excercise in CONTEXT for Archeologists (and also geologists). Wherein the context (placement and relationship of other objects in the area) of an object is far more important than the measuring of the age of an object since objects can be moved, displaced, etc by either man, machine, animal or natural forces.

I enjoyed your post Morgreth. Study archeology at some point?

The problem as I see it when debating these subjects with somone who belives in the biblical creation is that they usually dont belive in using reason and logic as tools. They will claim it´s perfectly logical but for reason and logic to work you need to accept a number of rules which are very easily broken (even by the most brilliant researchers). Thats why science needs debate and peer rewiev.
