Fix the fat ass

Postby The Kizzy » Tue Sep 05, 2006 2:44 pm

My brother was labeled obese by his doctor. It is now my life's mission to cook healthier for him. Any ideas or recipes would be appreciated.

I dropped all my weight by cutting out fried foods (which I plan on doing for him) switching to diet pop and water instead of regular pop and juices (which I have already made him do) and going to the gym 4 times a week for a few months. (Which he is looking into)

THe doctor gave him a pretty big scare, and he is really concerned now. He came home for lunch and I made him a veggie green salad with some egg white, tomato, avacodo, and tuna with some low fat italian dressing for lunch. He said he was still hungry when he was done, so I gave him a banana and baby carrots.

MY problem is fixing whole meals that are healthy. I have no problem eating whatever I cook, I would just love some recipe ideas. Thanks.

He didn't know he was obese before the doctor told him?

I think I might have even heard about it on these boards, but http://www.24hourfitness.com has a recipe of the day that they will email you for free.

Also I have a South Beach Diet cookbook that I picked up for $5 but haven't even looked at, if you are interested in this, I'd happily ship it off to you.

south beach diet is a crock of shit, don't bother with it

best way to help him lose weight is just simple portion control while forcing him to get off his fat ass and exercise more

oh, and drink way more water

I remember reading once upon a time that a lot of people confuse water pangs, with hunger pangs (ie body is asking for water, but brain interprets it as COOKIES OMFG)

Actually, the South Beach Diet is decent.

However, losing weight isn't complicated.

1. Exercise at least once daily

2. Do not eat after 8 PM. Period.

3. Eat four small meals a days.

4. Eat healthy, fried or sugary stuff is bad. Soda is the devil.

5. Snack on Apples, Pears, Pickles, A small amount of peanuts, or vegetables.

6. Take a day off and holidays to eat bad food, but do not bend much during normal days.

As far as recipes, Grilled Chicken, Fish, Vegetables, and brown rice are all good. I find Crystal is a godsend for filling in munching with no calorie drinks. It tastes decent and gives one 'something'.

Fuck all these special diets. Look people it's simple. Eat less calories than you burn and you lose weight. It's just that simple... really.

There are plenty of web site calorie calculators where one can see how many calories they're burning per day - and with a little work - they can keep track of what they're eating.

Cut back on what you eat, work out and WOW the weight will come off! Imagine that! Sorry, to be an ass about it, but people spend way to much time fucking around with these "pay-to-lose-weight" fad diets.

If you really want to lose weight... seriously... just cut back on what you're eating (you don't have to give up the foods you love), watch your calories and WORK OUT.

These diets share the SAME problem. Once people lose the weight they go back to eating normal and the weight comes right back on. That's why it's important to eat what you normally do, just less of it. If you like coke, drink coke, just stop drinking a two liter a day and drop down to a can or two. If you like steak... eat steak, just eat an 8 ounce instead of a 12 ounce. Instead of watching TV when you get home from work or school - join a gym, go to a track, join the Y... if you can't afford 30 or 40 bucks a month, then you're not serious about losing the weight.

Seriously, people - don't bother with these diets... all you're doing is making someone rich and fooling yoursevlves.

I try to eat mainly during the day because between working and doing stuff I figure I'm burning off some of it than if I eat then go to bed right after. Makes sense.

Its a great workout.

Seriously though, I think of dietary systems like fires.

Your goal is to keep the fire going steadily at all times, even if it is just a small fire.

You can burn synthetics, but that ends up leaving nasty remnants after the fire is finished.

Flesh burns, but not as well as plants.

Some oils burn clean, others are toxic as hell.

A small fire going constantly will consume more than one where you toss huge logs onto it every 8 hours.

Thats about it for the metaphors.

Eat light, eat simple, eat often(5+ times a day).
Exercise helps if you have a sedentary lifestyle.
Water helps purge shit out of your system, without it, your kidneys clog up full of shit.

I just had a gala apple sliced in 4 with a teaspoon of organic peanut butter on top of each slice, it was good. I had 8 ounces of skim milk with it. That was my dinner. I'm going to sleep now.

It's not all about eating less. Its eating right. I was eatting tons of food in the hospital and lost about 8-10 lbs without any physical workout other than getting out of bed to pee.
A typical menu for a day was something like:
Breakfast:
1 scrambled egg
1 bacon
1 toast
small bowl of special k or corn flakes with skim milk or dry
1/2 cup juice
1 cup coffee

Lunch:
Chicken breast
1/2 cup rice
1/2 cup green veggie
1/2 cup other veggie
1 dinner roll
1 serving soup
tea
1/2 cup fruit

Dinner:
Tuna club sandwich
1/2 cup green veggie
1/2 cup other veggie
1/2 cup noodles
1 dinner roll
1 serving soup or salad
tea
1/2 cup fruit

Snack:
Graham crackers, peanut butter and 1/2 cup fruit.

Dont cook the food with a bunch of added shit like oil or salt as neither are terribly good for you.
Drink water when you feel hungry in between meals then wait 30 minutes. If you still feel hungry, eat an apple and peanut butter or some crackers and cheese.

Put him on a diabetic diet.

1. Exercise

2. Exercise

3. Exercise

4. Limit or eliminate any foods that contain HFCS (High Fructose Corn Syrup)

5. Reduce or eliminate saturated fats. Best way is to avoid partially hydrogenated or fully hydrogenated oils like the plague.

6. Don't just eat meat and potatoes. Make sure he has plenty of servings of fruits and veggies everyday.

7. More water than pop. When it has to be pop, it should be caffeine free. Otherwise, he'll fight water retention and possibly get discouraged about any weight loss.

8. Food that is high in protein and low-glycemic (i.e., food that doesn't spike your blood sugar) will help him feel fuller, longer and he won't be apt to binge as much.

9. If all else fails, put him on Nutrisystems for a while. I know a lot of people that have done that and it really works well.

10. Exercise

I've been making him breakfast every morning, and I also buy grapes and baby carrots for him to snack on between meals. I have almost completely cut all the fat out of his diet except poly and mono and still those are in low doses. Its only been a coupleof weeks, but he can already tell a difference. His clothes are starting to fit a little better.

IMHO, I don't believe low-fat diets are good long-term solutions. Fat is important and is NOT evil! Low-fat diets restrict vitamin absorption. Also, again IMHO, low-fat diets lead to binge eating down the road as the body is starved for fats. The better solution is to incorporate those good fats, like mono-unsaturated, along with good carbs (i.e. low-glycemic, non-blood sugar spiking) and lots of protein.

Then, make him work his fat ass off on whatever exercise equipment he's willing to use. Treadmill, bike, weights, whatever.
