Don't eat raw spinach

Postby Martrae » Fri Sep 22, 2006 10:00 am

I case y'all managed to avoid the media onslaught, raw spinach has been causing a fairly big outbreak of E.Coli.

I wouldn't eat spinach period, but thats just me. Then again, it makes me sick just to think about the taste.

Was a spinach smoothie...which sounds gross.

We use spinach in salads here....the kids like it. They also like broccoli. <3 my kids.

I was listening to NPR about this, and they had a doctor on there talking about the effects of E Coli, and said that it normally has its worst impact on the really young. The thing was, we'd caught a real break this time and there were almost no cases of really young kids getting it this time, for the simple reason that kids normally don't like spinach.

Obviously, that's not a universal case, but nevertheless, it's still generally true, and for the most part, the victims haven't been young kids, which has kept the death count much lower than it might have been.

True story: I was in a Jasons Deli today eating my surrendermonkey dip, when this HUGE lady sitting a few tables behind me shrieks, "Shit! Is that Spinach!"
and then quieter i hear "Fuck!" from her.

I almost shot my powerade out of my nose.

I ate bagged spinach before the whole thing came out, and I was sick for 5 days. It wasn't deadly, but at first I thought it was food poisoning and then, after it lasted a while, I figured it was a stomache virus. It was pretty painful...

The FDA just said that it's now safe again to eat Spinach, as long as it's not from California's Salinas Valley.
