anemia

Postby leah » Wed Nov 08, 2006 4:42 pm

so, i've been inexplicably tired lately--despite the fact that i get eight fairly decent hours of sleep a night--and my mom indicated that she thinks perhaps i'm anemic.

any way to tell, other than to get tested? i can't afford doctor visits right now.

Can't hurt you, and can only help. You're female, in your young 20's, you diet, and work full time. Chances are, your iron levels are probably a bit low, especially if you just went through a cycle.

There are a couple different kinds of anemia. Iron will only *really* help you if it's an iron deficency anemia. It can't hurt to take it, though. Folic acid suppliments, too. Folic acid helps with the development of new blood cells. My doctor also told me that it helps skin & hair look nice, but I'd never heard that anywhere else. If you have a hemolytic anemia, though, then the suppliments can't hurt, but they won't help as much as they should.

Being tired & craving ice are a couple of symptoms. Other possible symptoms may include extreme shortness of breath, killer headaches, and paleness in the lips & fingernails, depending on what sort of anemia it is. One test my mom would also use on me is she'd push on my nail bed and see how long it'd take the blood to fill back in. It should be nearly immediately.

Those were the symptoms I had a couple years back when my anemia got *really* bad, and my hemoglobin levels dropped from their normal 10/10.5 down to 4, which ended up with me in the hospital getting a blood transfusion. But I have one particular kind of anemia, Spherocytosis, which means that my blood cells are more spherical than disc shaped, so they get destroyed within 12 or so days rather than 120. If you simply have an iron deficiency anemia, then the OTC suppliments could help a lot.

Are you sure it's anemia and not laziness?

I heard from the dude at GNC (not sure if this was a sales line or not) that when you take a multivitamin your body only absorbs 10% of it. It's better to take separate vitamins to get the full effect or eat a balanced diet of fruits and veggies and protein. Care to validate this Mop?

Its not true its better to take a quality multivitamin... IE like this

GNC brand sells a multi vitamin with 3000% of your daily C, which your body urinates out all of it since its not time released. 1000% of your D , which ends up stored in fat and on a low fat diet even more so, since it needs fat to digest into the body. It has alot of calcium but not enough magnesium to have the body digest the calcium... in a round about way he is right.

Where as you can find time released ones that will give you 80 - 90 % effect, personaly I think centrum is some of the best on the market - I usually take half the dose recommended in the one I take as I have gotten back to eating healthier and getting my daily intake of fruits and veggies.

I didnt read this whole thread as I am busy being a complete asshole in other threads, Leah are you eating RED meat at all? At least once a week.

Tubesteak does not count  I've tried using that line on a girlfriend once before and she sent me an article disputing it. :(

Seriously, I'm happy to hear you have a healthy diet and are feeling much better.
