Anyone have input on one of these? I'm looking for something that can keep me "tone" but also something the wife and kids can use without fear of crushed bones or other troubles that free weights could cause :p.

This unit is about 500.00 or so and you can use up to 210 lbs of weight but the reports I'm seeing imply that it's much less than 210 due to the way the flex bars work or something.

Anyone have personal experience with one of these?

josh had a bowflex for a few years, though i don't remember what model. he liked it pretty well, but we eventually got rid of it because it became unwieldy to move/took up a lot of space, and he wanted to do a little more than what the bowflex would allow, so he just joined a local gym. he was pretty happy with it when he was using it, though. just be sure you're not going to end up buying a $500 coatrack.

I don't have space issues so that is off my list. I guess it was more about the 210lbs limit. After reading a bit more though it looks like folks are ok with that so long as they move slower on reps / sets.

The other bit I was worried about is height. I have to measure my ceiling in the basement as I don't recall if 81" will clear.

I worry about the coatrack comment though, I do not want one of those LOL

Waste of money. Free weights or no weights and a rubber tube. Bowflex is like glorified resistance workouts anyways imho

I personally like going to the gym. It's a lot more pricey compared to a bowflex but it gets me out of the house, I get to check out hot girls in lululemon yoga pants and I got a ton of equipment to choose from.

Free weights have already caused issues with the kids though. I've got a 500lbs free weight set from when I was a kid, I wanted to go with something better.

I don't want to take 60 mins to work out and a gym would sort of need this or pay for a family of 4, etc. I've had multiple gym memberships over years and I can't say any of them were really worth it.

The best work outs I've had are with free weights but that isn't safe enough for the family right now.

I'll check out that spin offs though Tikker, I've got no loyalty to brand.

How old are kids?

11 and 14. It always starts nice but then it tends to go south from there :p.

Free weights just aren't as safe. I hear you though and I'm just making excuses, I could beat the shit of them until they comply :p. I would need less space and have a broader workout option. The wife won't touch the free weights. 500.00 isn't all that much to me. I would easily drop twice that on eq a year :\

School today isn't what it used to be, not sure if you've heard (:p). Those type of courses aren't offered any more, at least at the kids school. In fact, they've nearly outsourced all sports and most likely won't even have a sports program at all next year unless private funding is found (too many GOPers that won't allow millages, fuckers ). Things like auto-shop, home-ed, wood shop, all those programs are on chopping blocks waiting to being dissolved should funding become too big a problem

Yeah, there's some good bargains to be had on CL. Just watch out for scammers though.

though it was actually kind of a pain in the balls because the glut of unwanted bowflexes meant we had to lower our asking price considerably. oh well, at least it's gone!

It is that easy. My dad had free weights when I was young. Lo and behold I never injured myself. I think it had something to do with him putting them away when he was done using them, and when I used them to entertain whatever whim I had at the moment he was there to watch me.

Jay, it's nice to recall the day when you were a kid and all of that. I tell my kids the same sorts of things. The issue is of course, that was then and this is now. That and also I'm not there to watch them when they want to "work out".

As I said, once your child gets older, you'll be able to tell the same stories your dad told you. Just don't forget, the world then is not the world now. Kids today are not the same kids tomorrow and all that other "crap" you've heard a dozen times :p
