I'm still trying to wrap my mind around how he simply walked in with a weapon in a bag onto a military installation with a budget of 30 BILLION dollars a year.

I go to the Naval base in Newport, RI every Tuesday to use the gym. I get my bag checked at the gate before I'm even allowed on base, even with my CAC card.

Someone failed their job and needs to be court martialed, or NJP'd at the fucking minimum.

I call bullshit. I have been a federal employee on a navy installation for 4 years and my father worked on a navy installation for 30. When I travel for work along the gulf coast it's the same drill at every base. Never has it ever been the case that they inspect everyone's bags/vehicles daily. Once in a while there are inspections where it's a random selection for a thorough check, but never have they ever inspected every car that extensively. There is a reason you have to be at airports so early to get through security. You would never get on base as long as that would take to inspect that many thousands of people that thoroughly on a daily basis. It isn't difficult for someone--especially someone who has already been vetted and has a legitimate ID--to get through the gate with something. The question moreso lies with why they would approve his clearance with his prior history, not with how he got it on base that day.
