Those born 1930-1979

Postby ClakarEQ » Fri Feb 15, 2008 1:24 pm

I know, this is probably old and maybe even a repost, I just got it today though and had a good smile over it.
TO
ALL THE KIDS WHO SURVIVED the 1930's, 40's, 50's, 60's and 70's!!

First, we survived being born to mothers who smoked and/or drank while they were
pregnant.

They took aspirin, ate blue cheese dressing, tuna from a can, and didn't get tested
for diabetes.

Then after that trauma, we were put to sleep on our tummies in baby cribs covered
with bright colored lead-based paints.

Most of our bright colored toys were painted with lead based paints and they didn't come from China or any other foreign country.

We had no childproof lids on medicine bottles, doors or cabinets and when we rode
our bikes, we rode double, sometimes on the handlebars, we had no helmets, not to mention, the risks we took hitchhiking.

As infants & children, we would ride in cars with no car seats, booster seats,
seat belts or air bags. Too top it off we rode in cars that had rumble seats and suicide doors.

Riding in the back of a pick up on a warm day was always a special treat.

We drank water from the garden hose and NOT from a bottle.

We shared one soft drink with four friends, from one bottle and NO ONE actually died from this.

We ate cupcakes, white bread and real butter and drank Kool-aid made with sugar,
but we weren't overweight because,

WE WERE ALWAYS OUTSIDE PLAYING!

We would leave home in the morning and play all day, as long as we were back when
the streetlights came on.

No one was able to reach us all day. And we were O.K. No sick child molester grabbed us.

We would spend hours building our go-carts out of scraps and then ride down the
hill, only to find out we forgot the brakes. After running into the bushes a
few times, we learned to solve the problem.

We did not have Playstations, Nintendo's, X-boxes, no video games at all, no 150
channels on cable, no video movies or DVD's, no surround-sound or CD's, no cell
phones, no personal computers, no Internet or chat rooms.......

WE HAD FRIENDS and we went outside and found them!

We fell out of trees, got cut, broke bones and teeth and there were no lawsuits
from these accidents.

We ate worms and mud pies made from dirt, and the worms did not live in us
forever.

We were given BB guns for our 10th birthdays, made up games with sticks and tennis
balls and, although we were told it would happen, we did not put out very many
eyes.

We rode bikes or walked to a friend's house and knocked on the door or rang the
bell, or just walked in and talked to them!

Little League had tryouts and not everyone made the team. Those who didn't had to
learn to deal with disappointment. No phychologist to mend your little damaged mind. Imagine that!!

The idea of a parent bailing us out if we broke the law was unheard of. They slapped our butt and
actually sided with the law!

These generations have produced some of the best risk-takers, problem solvers and
inventors ever!

The past 50 years have been an explosion of innovation and new ideas.

We had freedom, failure, success and responsibility, and we learned HOW TO DEAL
WITH IT ALL! Why, we didn't have the extreme liberal invasion yet and fruit cakes in Hollywood.

If YOU are one of them CONGRATULATIONS!

You might want to share this with others who have had the luck to grow up as kids,
before the blood sucking lawyers and the power grabbing government regulated so much of our lives for our own good

While you are at it, forward it to your kids so they will know how brave (and
lucky) their parents were.

Kind of makes you want to run through the house with
scissors, or butcher knife doesn't it?!

I still think that bottled water is one of the biggest and most successful consumer scams , ever. Test after test shows that, for most places anyway, the tap water is actually HIGHER quality than the bottled water. Not to mention, the tap water has flouride in it, which, despite the alarms of some conspiracy theorists, just helps build up the strength of your teeth.

Now, people are paying gazillions for crap that is less safe than they could get for pennies by turning on a faucet, we're generating who knows how much landfill and non-biodegradable waste with the bottles, and somewhere, the guy who thought it all up is laughing himself hysteric as he rolls around in his Scrooge McDuck sized money bin.

Bottled water makes no sense to me, unless the water quality in your area is TRULY bad, and even then, you can get filters that still end up making it cost pennies. If you need to take water with you, get a fucking sports bottle or thermos.

I get that list about once a year in the email and I always smile over it because it's so true. When we were growing up my little sister went to AM kindergarten. She got out of school 2 hours before I got home. She came in, she sat down on the couch and she watched cartoons until I got home. My parents had to work and god knows no one had a babysitter for the daytime (babysitters were only for parents date nights). No one called the cops on us, and the other people in the area watched out to make sure she got in the house all right. We went outside without parental supervision and played till it got dark, my mother never thought to check to see if we were all right. My aunt lived about 5 miles away from us and my siblings and I would go walking to her house at the drop of a hat.

These days we hesitate before leaving my 15yr old nephew home alone and my younger niece and nephews don't even get to step foot outside on the porch/deck without someone there. My nephew gets driven everywhere because walking along some nutjob could do anything. I live in a nice area with no major crimes and we're still scared of what could happen. It's just not the same world it once was, it's sad.

haha...the go kart thing made me laugh too. I flipped myself over and thought I died once. another time, I pretended I was "parking the car" in our go kart and I pulled up behind our camper and accidentally hit the gas instead of the brake and rammed myself into the back of the camper, grinding my shin into the bumper and that scar is still there.

I found a dog walking the side of the country road on the way to my hometown yesterday and when I took her to the SPCA I saw the lady who lives three doors down, still, and we had to take a few minutes to laugh about old times. Those *were* the good old days. You'd hear her at dark, "MAAATHEEEEW COOOOME HOOOOOME" and at dark my Mom would yell, "AAAAASHLY, SCOOOOTT, CHRIIIIIIS, COOOOOOME HOOOOOME" haha. I was always kissing boys in the haystacks of the cow pastures.

    Same, of course with caveats.

For us people nearing 40, it was a vastly different world we grew up in then even the 20somethings of today.

If you talk to people in their 80s, it's amazing what the world was like back then. They can remember when Radio first became popular. That was the early 20th century version of the Internet.

I can't recall being inside my house playing almost ever as a child, from 5 on I was tossed outsde. Now, you can't get the kids to go outside.

Meh, I'm recently 26 and much of the list holds true for me as well. I watched myself after school, and my friends and I would constantly run/bike to each other's houses and go play. We'd bike all around town, and go spend our hard saved pennies on candy at the drug store. We'd bike to the local swimming pool in the summer, swim for a while, and bike home.

I guess not having biological children, just a step-daughter, I wonder how much of the paranoia is merited or if times have changed because parents are the ones who have changed and don't trust their kids and coddle them too much. What would happen if parents relaxed a bit and encouraged their kids to play outside with other kids? Are there that many more psychos in the world now that kids would disappear at a mad rate? I hear everyone constantly complain about the same things, about what's wrong with the world, that leads me to believe that most of us still share the same values. Would neighbors watch out for the neighborhood kids if that sort of a relationship is formed with them? I dunno. Maybe if I ever wind up with a kid of my own I too, will be too scared to test it out, but I am curious about that.

My mom made us go outside because there were too many of us and she liked her house clean. We weren't allowed to bring anyone inside, either.

My great aunt (i think thats what she is) ran the local company general store in the coal camp my family used to live in back in the day, and she always used to talk about how theyd go home for lunch or whatever and just leave the store open, and anyone who came in and needed something would just go get what they needed and leave the money on the counter. They never worried about anything happenin back then

    That is logical though.

I remember when you didnt have to lock anything. You could walk down the street at 3 am and people would be sleeping with the front door wide open. Everying knew everyone. You pulled some shit a few blocks over and a neighbor caught you they would kick your ass and then take you home to your parents who would then kick your ass for doing dumb shit and then kick it again for embarrasing them with the neighbors...
