I just wanted to comment that I was excited to see a new topic in the ask tossica forum.

since I am pretty much the kewlest person here I will answer your question for now. you want to be sure to display all of your media, books..people like to be able to turn around and grab a book or pretend to be staring at your collection when things are awkward or too quiet. plus people are nosy. be sure to have a mini fridge or bar area, boiled peanuts and give people freedom with the music you listen to. they'll appreciate that. and lamps..you will need lamps of all sorts of wattage. ashtrays for your smokers and magazines (FH, playboy, whatever you read) and snacks on hand. in the restroom keep hand lotion/soaps/towels (burts bees is a good brand that is niether feminine nor masculine) so people feel clean after using the facilities. no smells from the fridge.

Get an L shaped idea going on for your furniture surrounding the table in a corner somewhere.

This focuses on the table since you're mostly playing card games. But keeps it out of the way for those not doing so.

Getting a pool table instantly turns you into the coolest guy around too. Assuming you have enough room for this that is...

Table tennis rocks too, and has other more obvious partying uses.

if there's chicks, get a hot tub

I suspect you only host sausage parties tho, so just get a folding card table and a keg of beer

Get lots of conversation pieces. We have great parties because every room is filled with stuff that makes people go "WHOA! What is that?!" Also, get things that allow people to entertain themselves so you are not working too hard as a host. In my fish room I have obviously the aquarium but I also have a small 13" TV and an old NES with Mario and Zelda games. Everyone loves those. There is seating for about 6 in there. The "media" room has enough seating for around 10 people for watching movies on the big screen but it also has a chess board, my Virtual Boy, lots of artwork and coffee table books, etc. My studio is cramped for seating but has my turntables, all my records, synths, bass guitar, drum machines etc where people can jam, play some records, etc. We also have a small room for people to do things they don't want others to see that has a locking door. Upstairs has our "sitting room" with a nice couch and two Chaise lounges with another TV and Xbox if people want to watch something or play system link games with the folks downstairs. The dining room is where we play cards and has comfortable seating for 6-8 people with a round table, has the bar and the sliding glass door to the back deck where we have seating for another dozen or so people. We can play croquet and badminton in the yard and can turn the underground sprinklers on for the kids in the summer. We also have a fire pit in the yard and seating around that for roasting squirrels, cats, etc and telling ghost stories.

Oh, get a case of Miller High Life, a bag and a big bong. Those are always hits too.

I had the jukebox for a while, was a lot easier to just use the HTPC to do it

Get a low coffee table and a big poker table top. Instead of chairs, which are cumbersome especially with 12 people, get bean bags or just use cushions for seating. Most importantly, coasters, coasters and coasters. All drinks need a coaster and no wet foods outside of the kitchen in my house.

Dartboard is a must. The cork variety is what I prefer. Gotta have a flat LCD with video games, a computer connected to some nice speakers for some beats, board games (chess, checkers. For the ladies have Twister handy)

Just want to add that I dont feel like such a dork since I know other people my age gather with their friends to play card games. (and random board games because I'm a nerd like that)
Our friends' set up (apartment type) is an area in the living room for seating and Gid and my ex talk computer shop. The dining area is set up with a table and some chairs and we play spades most of the night, or drinking games if the mood strikes us and noone has to get up early in the morning. They always have snacky foods and chips and cokes and beer and we sometimes bring over dinner for everyone if we havent eaten yet.
Last Sat we played Scene It for a couple hours and some other game another couple. There were 8 or so people plus some kids. We're easily entertained so we dont really need fancy things to ooh and ahh us. Its really just about getting together once a week and enjoying adult company, not pretending to be empressed with gadgets.

Scene It is one of the greatest drinking games.

Try the music edition too.
