no more metrodome

Postby brinstar » Thu Nov 20, 2008 1:43 am

toss do you like baseball

i want to go see a twins game and visit various friends i have in the MPLS-STP area sometime next summer

but most of the people i know up there aren't big baseball fans, and thus wouldn't appreciate the beauty that is a ballgame, a hotdog, and a frothy beer

I'd go check out a game with you for sure dude. I'm not a huge fan of baseball nor the metrodome but you can't beat beers, hot dogs and some friends. When the new dome is done, it's going to be an overall much better experience, I'm sure.

Seriously though, the metrodome sucks. I was not a fan of the idea of a new stadium until I got a look at what they are doing with it. It's impressive and I think it will ultimately be good for the metro.

oh yeah, the new stadiums are always better. they kinda have to be. i just hate the names they give em. ours here in eugene is changing from Civic Stadium to "Kilkenny Field" .... it's just like whoever named this new one thought they were above South Park or something. because the only thing i see coming now are endless amoutns of local news jokes and generally a whole lot of laughing about the new stadium til people get over it

Nope I was actually referring to the "oh my God! they killed Kenny" from South Park.

And Tikker's just trying to be a big shot. But unfortunately, here in Oregon, Pat Kilkenny is the athletic director of the University of Oregon, who reinstated baseball in the school's sports program as of last year and has donated millions of dollars with his wife to realize this new stadium. It's got nothing to do with the delicious irish cream beer he's confusing it with—or the little town in Ireland that it comes from. Just some rich douchebag

k thanks bye

Fulton County Stadium was a cooler name than "Turner Field" wonder who came up with that name!! I've heard it's a great stadium, I haven't been yet, though.

Named for Ted Turner, owner of CNN & The Braves, I believe (maybe TNT too? I can't remember). It's a really neat field. I really enjoyed the Braves game I went to last spring. Turner Field was actually built when Atlanta hosted the Olympics in 96. It was built as part of a larger arena that hosted the track & field events, I believe. After the Olympics were over, it was designed so that they could collapse it down into the current size it is now and be the Brave's new home.

And despite being named for an electronics company, Philips Arena is pretty neat too.

Re: the Metrodome. I was still living in Minnesota when they first started talking about wanting donations from people of the state for a new stadium for their baseball team. I thought that was pretty stupid. I'm amazed that like, 10 years later it's finally being done. The Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodrome (is it still called that?) was kinda lame, but the only time I had been there was to watch my highschool football team compete for state championship, and once other for a Twins game the year they won the World Series back when I was in elementary school.

Good times.

i am aware of this, but i would argue that time has mostly obfuscated that fact

i mean, ask a sports fan which is the better name:

Wrigley Field or U.S. Cellular Field

Camden Yards or Minute Maid Park

Comiskey Park or AT&T Park

Fenway or Petco

or for that matter, Jobing.com Arena or Joe Louis Arena

do you think names like those on the right will sound as authentic in 90 years as Wrigley does now?

There would be riots if they changed Fenway's name.

well ballparks don't last forever, don't be surprised when it happens ;\

i think wrigley and fenway are now the two oldest parks still in operation, aren't they?

Fenway has had some recent renovations so it will likely stick around longer.

Not sure about where Wrigley lands itself in the timeline but I know Fenway is the oldest.

not disagreeing

it's just kinda funny that people complain about the new corporate sponsorship, and it's always been around (obviously tho, with less retarded names back then)

The school I went to, Marshall, changed their football stadium to Joan C Edwards field. A fucking woman. How gay is that. I dont know if anyone else has done it yet, but at the time it was the first NCAA team to name one after a bitch. Kind of embarrassing! Just because some woman donates a bajillion dollars to the med school, they name the damn stadium after he. Blah. They need cooler names, intimidating names, like Ballstomper Stadium, or Ass Kicking Fuck Shit Stadium, or Bastard Seven Stadium.

I hate sports and never went to a real baseball game in my life. But this past month, two dudes asked me to go to Cubs games with them. I was like ummm.....if I get a hot dog and a beer, I will go.
