BRK/B: Yes, absolutely. All hail the Oracle. I got in relatively early, currently sitting on 50 shares.

Also SPY (SPDR). My SPY and BRK/B taken together represent a little over 2/3 of what I've got in stock.

crypto: This one strikes a resonant chord -- I really want an alternative to the current ...

Re: Life updates

My father was recently diagnosed with a cancerous growth as well - in his case, it's a myeloid sarcoma that formed in the lower abdomen and is of sufficient size that it's affected blood circulation to the legs (the growth is pressing against arteries in the area). He's started chemotherapy and may ...

None of the choices interest me, and the system seems as polarized and ineffectual as it was when I was first able to comprehend it.

I remain completely apathetic with respect to the (national-level) political machinations of the country in which I live.

Re: Being Socially Conscious vs Being a Pussy

Maybe it's not conversation, but in social settings that don't involve people I've known for 30+ years, it seems I frequently do little talking at all -- I mostly just listen -- and many people really, really, want to talk. There's one guy here at work that's a real raconteur -- he's got stories of ...

Actual money is "pretend". It only has value because we implicitly agree that it has value.

That it operates as a convenience so that we needn't return to a barter system benefits far more than it disadvantages -- if there's no plumbing work to be had, it's hard to barter with something for which ...

I love shooting my bow, though I have not done so for quite a while now.

I'd hunted with the bow a bit, but I'd never taken game with it.

In fact, with the exception of game birds (with a shotgun), I never took any game on a hunting trip -- I guess for me it was just more the experience of it ...

Just wondering: Did President Whitmore do "his" thing for 11 years running, or were some of "his" 11 total posts not related to his 'good morning' speech?

The World Cup is my favorite sporting event bar none.

I like the international feel, the camaraderie, the green vastness of the pitch, the crowd breaking into anthems, the way the pace of the game can change at any given moment.

I probably have European ancestry, but I've never given it much ...

My lunch hour had nowhere near that level of adrenaline.

I wonder if the driver had a heart attack and/or was dead before the vehicle left the road. It must have been a scary experience regardless.

Warren Buffet is offering a billion dollars to the person that can perfectly predict the NCAA bracket this year...

Of course, the (coinflip) odds of winning are about 1 in 9,223,372,036,854,775,808 -- which to my mind means there's a greater chance of getting struck by lightning 18 times in a row ...

I'm preparing to start in a new job myself on March 3rd. Salary increase is almost $12K/year, and it's less overall responsibility than my current post -- that made the decision to switch pretty much a no-brainer.

I noted a distinct dearth of applause after Bill Nye's opening statement, which I found amusing.

Ken Ham's technique of introducing (via video) all of those established scientists that are also biblical creationists smacks of 'appeal to authority' (i.e. there are respected scientists who believe it ...

Re: What do you hate most about your job?

People who pump themselves up to the boss the most get promoted, not those who have the best qualities.

This is unfortunate, but it seems to be the lynchpin in the "get noticed - move up" house that we've built for ourselves.

I guess it's the least least-desireable of the possible alternatives.
