Controllers compatable with console Emulators?

I have tried 3 different ones (2 new, both returned =(, 1 old) yet to no avail and desperately require one to continue my emulator nerdery: particularly Pj64, znes & nesticle. Any suggestions?

Pick up a standard XBox controller and get the drivers installed.
