Buying a new Computer (help please)

Postby Jazendar » Sun Apr 24, 2005 1:36 pm

Ok, I'm looking to buy a new computer. I've got roughly 900-950 dollars to spend. I've got a 19' monitor from View sonic, currently my comp specs are-
2.3ghz
512 ram
radeon 9200
80g hd

Right now, i lag bad. Maybe it's because i've not wiped in awhile, but i get less than 1fps in Orgrimmar, lagging to hell. (World of warcraft). I play counterstrike and get roughly 40-60fps in there. I spike a lot in WoW and would like to upgrade my pc, completely.

here is a list of the things i'm thinking of getting.

http://www2.newegg.com/Product/Product. ... 6820145440

Which is the Ram

http://www2.newegg.com/Product/Product. ... 6813130468

Which is the motherboard

http://www2.newegg.com/Product/Product. ... 6822153018

Which is the Hardrive

http://www2.newegg.com/Product/Product. ... 6819116171

Which is the processor

http://www2.newegg.com/Product/Product. ... 6814130215

Which is the Video card

http://www2.newegg.com/Product/Product. ... 6811208004

Which is the case

All of that would cost 1003 dollars, (i'm not sure if they included tax or not). I need to know whether or not that these items are good investments. I don't know how to put together computers, but I've got a friend who does. I live 30 minutes from Fry's in Sacramento as well, so I could go there and buy stuff, but i think newegg is cheaper. If anyone has any other sites, ideas, comments, feedback, Anything would be a big help. I'm trying to save as much money as I can, because 1000 dollars is really pushing the limit.

Thanks in advance.

Sigh, you have a pentium chip with a socket 939 board (AMD)

Get yourself an AMD chip or consider having your friend help you with the selections.

Your CPU and Video Card will not work on that mother board.

replace processor with
http://www2.newegg.com/Product/Product. ... 6819103502

Replace motherboard wit
http://www2.newegg.com/Product/Product. ... 6813136152

or

http://www2.newegg.com/Product/Product. ... 6813130484

And finally replace the HD with
http://www2.newegg.com/Product/Product. ... 6822144322

The rest looks good, price wise you will see very little change with the changes I suggested.

Don't go to Fry's unless you want to spend 20-30% more than what you can get the parts for on Newegg. Where do you live anyway? I'm about 35-40 minutes from that Fry's.

By the sound of it...it would be much easier for you to buy a premade computer.

Or let that friend of yours do it for you if he knows what he is doing.

Ok, sit down with him and let him configure your cart from newegg.

Then just in case bring it here and post the contents of your cart.

Or IM it to me with the AIM link at the bottom of my post.

Although I don't like the MB out of personal preference.

It should run fine nonetheless.

You hear anything bad about them? Have a few friends using that board and they love it. I lean toward abit myself.

I'm just not a fan of motherboards I've not heard much about...nothing bad or anything good I've heard so far.

I would go with a WD over a Crapstor anyday btw.

Any hard drive I've EVER had crash on me was a Maxtor.

This is also an SATA (faster than PATA) and has a better average seek time with more space (250g)

Is only $132 and much better quality.(use the cash saved by switching MB's if you choose to do so)

Ok i talked to a couple people, and here is my new list. Just switched the hd like you said Harrison. I also switched the 6800gt to a ATI card that's cheaper with the same specs, and in some places better. I looked on Anandtech.com and looked at the different tests ran between the two on different games and they were virtually the same. Saving myself some money, which then i poured into the new harddrive. I also added 2 fans which are compatible with the case i'm getting, front and back.

That's basically it, my list is made. Time to grab my old man's credit card and punch in the numbers. I put it on next day shipping because i can't wait :P. Gonna have to wait to get the card for a few days though, he has to order a new one =/. Thanks a lot for the help guys, appreciate it.
