pagefile

Postby Ouchyfish » Mon Feb 06, 2006 10:09 pm

(This post was written by someone that has no clue how xp works-please keep that in mind.)

My brother's PC has 2 drives. One is the original and the other is an exact copy that was put in shortly after he got it. (They were both those OEM drives that comes with HPs)

The question I have is, should there be a pagefile on both drives? One, on C is over a gig, and the one on E is about 300-400 megs.

I am trying to troubleshoot why this fucker runs so slow (not viri, adware, or spyware) but it's difficult to do knowing so little about how this shit works.

I wish there was a way I could just reset his registry and have it register the programs the way 3.1 did.

Anyways Thanks.

The one that isn't on the same drive as windows isn't necessary.

Unless you somehow have windows managing two seperate page files...in that case I'd give you a freaking cookie...

So is there a way to stop it from putting one on both drives? Tried to delete the second one but it won't let me...even in safe mode. it says it's in use.

:ugh:

Right click on my computer, click properties, advanced, performance, advanced, virtual memory/change, highlight the drive with the pagefile that you want to remove and set it to "no paging file". Click ok, blah blah blah, reboot. Done.

I'm just curious. Is the reason for the two hard drives because they are mirrored drives? If that is the case, you might want to hold off on deleting the other page file. With mirrored drives the primary is the only one that is read. The secondary is only there as a back up. Deleting a page file from a secondary drive on a mirrored drive system can have undesired effects if the primary drive shits the bed.

Nah it was an oem drive he got and decided to use as a spare drive for storage. I wish like hell that I would have just formatted the damn thing but I hated to waste a good copy of win xp.

Made the change and am starting to see some improvement, however now the commit charge in taskmanager says 185472k/638352k

That sound kosher? Not used to such a huge number =\
