Ever have one of those days?

Postby Tikker » Sun Mar 12, 2006 12:38 am

Was over at my brother's place, and noticed he had an AMD 2400+ and matching mobo sitting in a box

so I liberated them, and decided i'd test them out in test htpc box (an old compaq, p3 933, etc)

it's actually a pretty nice case, swing out hdd rack, etc etc, anyways

I opened it up, unplugged everything from the mobo, and pulled the mobo out, np

take the new mobo, and slide it in.....but it doesn't fit

turns out i need to replace the grill thinger that went with the compaq mobo
np, the right one is in the box

get that done, and get the mobo in place and screwed in

put some new thermal grease on the heat sink, put it down on the cpu, etc etc
grab the power and plug it in...

wrong fucking connector

now I have to pull the power from the floppy, 2x hdd and pop out the old power supply

head to the supply closet and grab the old PSU from my gaming rig, and check to make sure it's the 20 pin connector
good deal it is np

now take that set it in the case and omfg the fucker doesn't fit

fuck compaq and their proprietary shit

now I have to put everything back the way it was, and wasted most of an evening, jeje

Yeah, I screwed around with my sisters HP, and it was a similar experience.

part2!

picked up a copy of XP media centre edition from a friend

he'd mentioned he had lots of problems getting it installed, and gave up

I assumed he was just an idiot

install goes not too bad, but notice that the icon for IE is missing, and there's a weird empty folder in the control panel

then when I go to download firefox I notice i have no connectivity

turns out, somehow the install didn't install any networking components at all

and I can't add any!

re-install #3 going on atm, gogogo
