I have heard a lot of bad things about Tiger Direct.

That's Canadian dollars? For me, I'd be waiting for the end quarter Dell 50% off laptop sale if I wanted one. I think it'd be a bit cheaper for better stuff.

I paid $850 US for a comparable laptop (Compaq x1045US) three years ago, it didn't have near the video card in it that one does however. I'd say its a worthwhile venture. Worst case, you can pawn it off on a friend or family member for what you paid.

Its decent, nothing great. What are you looking to spend on a laptop and what do you want it to do?

mostly I want a laptop that's good enough to surf, watch movies on, and play some older games(obviously I don't care if it plays oblivion, but if it'll run EQ/WoW/Planetside type games, it'd rule)

I've currently got a p3 850 laptop with 512 ram and it's fantastic for almost everything
it's limited by it's amazing 8 mb shared vid card

so I want something with a bit more pep, but not willing to pay a huge amount of money for it

I know most people think they are overpriced, however alienware makes kick ass baseline laptops. Generally the performace on them outpaces everyone. Their enty level stuff starts around $900. What makes some of their entry level stuff so great is what you can add to them. For example, their entry level laptop can be configured with 256M x1600 or 6600 video cards, 160GB hd, Pentium M 780 and such. In all they are great procudes as is entry level, but can become serios machines with addons (we are still talking the entry level laptop)

I was able to put together a kickass laptop for just over $1500.
