iTunes crashes

When I open iTunes, it does a gapless playback checker on all my library, and gets to about 2000 out of 2200 songs, then freezes.

If I exit that scan, I can play maybe 5-10 songs, and then it will freeze up again, and I'll have to close iTunes using task manager.

Anyone experienced problems similar and have any ideas for fixes? I'm stumped. I've googled it and gotten a few ideas to try but most of those ideas I don't really use the same features anyway.
