I've never had to use one before, and I want to fiddle with a hulu plugin i'm building

of course hulu wants to pwn me because I'm outside the US

anyone know a somewhat reputable proxy?

I've googled a bunch, and my antivirus and firewall are going berserk with all the shit trying to hack me

Look up TorCP. Vidalia is its name now, in one convenient package. It also has a firefox plugin that's pretty slick.

It's essentially a P2P proxy. It's awesome for avoiding bans on forums and telling nazi admins to go fuck themselves.
