Video card

Postby Minrott » Sat Jan 14, 2006 5:55 pm

Is an NVidia 6800 GT 256mb still near the top of the game for video cards? I had one, then when I moved out of range of high speed internet I sold it to a friend, now that I've got DSL again and Quake is coming out I'm trying to gear back up to play.

I need an AGP card that will play Quake Wars, and probably FarCry again. I used to get around 55-60+fps in multiplayer and 100ish in single with my setup and a 6800 in FarCry. I'm looking at >$300.

6800 will do you just fine. My recommendations are that if you need more power, later on make sure you can get an identical 6800 and then get an SLI mobo. No single card can beat two SLI configured 6800's.

Ah yeah. In the future when the rest of my hardware becomes too dated I'll probably move to something like that. I should be allright for now, though on the low end of performance. I've just got too much shit going on right now to justify dropping $2k + on a puter.

My consoles stay stock, I don't want to fuck with it, therefore the playstation is my choice of weapon.

IF you only have the cash for a single card the ATI's would be better... I recommened the nvidia lines for the ability to run SLI down the road when you need more power. In the long run it will be cheaper IMO.

I disagree. SLI has always been for the people that are willing to spend $500+ on a video card. By the time he got around to putting another card in for the SLI setup, there will be a single card option that has better performance for less money.

Yeah, I pretty much agree with Tossica on this one

though, the day they can make SLI work without having identical vid cards, I'll jump on it

once you can upgrade 1 card at a time, i'll be happy

I don't understand how anyone can think the 850x is any measurable amount 'better' than a 6800 GT. Benchmarks mean nothing to me, all I know is I consistently got the same or better frame rates with my nvidia as others did with an 850x, with varying other components. Some had better cpu's some had worse, and maybe in two identical systems I don't think the difference is that critical.

I'll say something about ATI versus NVidia... ATI does seem to perform a VERY little bit better framerate-wise, but the overall picture quality of the Nvidia's is unmatched IMO.

I have an ATI x850XT 256MB GDDR3 card in my main gaming box which at the time of purchase was about a 325 dollar card...The 250 dollar NVidia 6800 in my work machine is a better card IMO. The colors are really warm and vibrant.

Anyone has the 7800gt? How is that one? Is it worth the money?

From what I've read in the last few days, that's a negative.

the 7800 is pretty good, but it's not $200 better than the 6800

for the money, the 6800 gt (or the ultra) are pretty good cards

You also are left with the Crossfire option later on down the road with an ATI x850+

It is ATI's version of SLI which doesn't require identical cards.

Get your AGP card while you can. I know Kahar won't be able to get them anymore really soon (next month?) because the manufacturers are all switching to PCI Express.

I have a 6800 GS in my new machine. My old one had a 6600GT OC. Loved them both and they both ran flawlessly.

Man you aren't kidding Martrae I'm already having trouble. ZipZoomFly only has 1 or 2 AGP 6800's and zero AGP x850 xt's.

Yeah, lots of x850s in AGP yet, no 6800GT's.

I ended up ordering the x850 Pro 256mb through Pricewatch for $256. That'll work, thanks for all the help and advice.
