Dual booting

Postby Darcler » Wed Jul 11, 2007 12:38 am

My PC has both Linux and Windows on it. When you start the computer, it defaults to wanting to boot into Linux, gives you that 10 second timer unless you move it to Windows.
How do I make the default Windows? Gid did it to this laptop but he failed to tell me how he did it. I'd like to be able to start up and walk away while it boots up without coming back and rebooting to get out of Linux.

Open the PC case, grab a large magnet and place it on the hard drive. Issue solved.

You need to change the grub boot file to change the default OS to boot to.

If you have the root password, login to linux as root

at the first command prompt, type
vi /boot/grub/menu.lst

You can move around within vi with the hjkl keys.

There will be a line with default 0, move over the 0. type r, then hit the number that coincides with your windows boot system, it should be 1, 2, 3 etc.. It is the number of places down windows is, starting at 0. If it is the third one down, it is 2.

after r, hit : then wq! which should be at the bottom of the screen and will save the file, and then reboot. Voila all done.

IM me if you are confuzzled.
