Networking for the geeks~

Postby Tikker » Fri Mar 11, 2005 12:56 pm

I've got a 5 pc network at home

fairly simple set up

modem > linksys router > 5 pc's

I've also currently got a 2nd DSL line in to provide TV over dsl (the ISP doesn't have enough bandwidth in this area yet to do it all on one modem, s they just install a 2nd line with naked dsl, it's nice~)

anyhoo

What I'd like to do somehow, is set up a network PVR that would let me record from the 1 network, to record on my fileserver

I'd also then like the ability to stream media from my network fileserver to any pc or TV (or possibly radio) in the house

any ideas?

Well, TV in card on one small PC in the livingroom, stream media over an internal network to central server. The same recording server in the livingroom can run WMP or WAMP or XAMP or some other music player software, piped through your switchbox into your stereo/tv/etc - you would need a record/playback server in each room you will have media devices, and probably wireless NICs connected to a central server for files/storage.

Basically each media PC will have two NICs one internal, and one external. The external NICs are not literally external, but would be on a "external network" the media PCs will all be connected on their own network, then you would basically bridge that network from the central media pc to the fileserver network of PC/interweb stuff.

Figure it out

Connect a router to your 2nd DSL.

Put a second nic in your fileserver and have it connect to both networks. This would allow anything on either network to access it.

Yah, basically that's what I said, but with less rambling.

Bridging in the 2nd DSL access isn't feasible really

The way it's set up, you need a specific device to grab an IP from that network, and it's not something that i can fudge (well, not without potentially getting fired)

here's the network

what I'm thinking is that I'll need to do have a PC with a tv in card, capture whatever to HDD, then use something like mythTV (which i don't know much about) to share all the media

that being said, I don't really want to have to plunk a PC in every room

Anyone know of a device similar to a Prismiq that can stream media?

Put a PC on the TV network.

In that PC have two (2) network cards (1 wireless if you prefer).

Connect that PC (NIC #1) to the TV network hub.

Connect the same PC (NIC #2) to the PC network router.

On NIC #1, set the gateway and other information to that of the modem of that network (or if you dont care for any external access forget the gateway.

On NIC #2, set the gateway and other information to that of the modem/router of the second network. This PC will now be homed on two networks. If you wish, at this point, to truely share the networks you can set up proxy services on that PC. Regardless, that PC will be able to act as a central fileserver for both networks.

If it is a decent PC you should be able to capture media on it and set up streaming software for the rest of the house.

The cable boxes on the TVs should be accessable by that PC, and as I mentioned before, you can set up proxy services on that box to allow you to access the TVs directly from the other network.
