Backup solution

Postby Tossica » Tue Jan 31, 2006 2:34 pm

I need a heavy duty backup solution for a 23 server network. They backup anywhere from 150-400GB daily. We are hoping for a network solution with removable drives for offsite storage. No more tapes...

Anyone have any experience with anything like this?

Lots. I personally wouldn't even consider removable drives instead of tapes. Tapes last longer, are cheaper, and enable more options. At a minimum stage to a big drive array and backup to tape.

Also, I'd ensure your network can handle the 400 gig of backup streaming across it, which will put a heavy burden on smaller connections.

Are you looking for a homegrown solution, off the shelf software, or enterprise level stuff?

Enterprise level.

Right now they are backing up to 2 SDLT drives. The full backup is taking close to 30hrs to run which is insane. The daily differential takes about 14. We will probably keep the SDLT drives for archiving purposes but get something like this for the main backup.

I'd consider upping that to 8 SDLT drives and also consider putting the backup solution on its own dedicated network. Your backup solution with two drives sounds like it is not taking restores into account. If you need a full restore, that will kill 1/2 your capability.

Most companies that do DBAR solutions also bundle offsite storage and support. If you want enterrpise, I'd highly recommend doing some research and contracting it out.

I did DBAR solutions for years, Toss. You have my email if you have any particular questions.
