Laptop Advice Quick!

Postby mofish » Fri May 05, 2006 1:26 pm

Yeah its an emergency.

Not really, but I want to get it ordered today. Im not that versed in laptop brands and stuff.

Looking to spend 1500 or less. Mostly will be used to run powerpoint slideshows at math conferences. And WoW and EQ2.

HP making good laptops these days? Any other brands anyone suggests?
Doesnt have to be a monster machine. 1 Gig of RAM should be enough.

Yeah I know that was a little higher then what you said, but if you go and customize em you can pick the next step down and keep pretty much everything except the windows xp pro (if you want) and drop it below 1500 most likely.

Maybe a slightly slower processor or get the 256 mb video card instead of the 512.

I wonder if that will stack with the other discounts?

If so awesome, if not you'd be better off with the coupon for true.

Its not a big deal. Not her money, its grant money. But the way it works is we have to pay for it, then wait a month for reimbursement. Its BS. Who the hell has that kind of cash laying around to wait for a reimbursal.

So how does Office licensing work anyway?

She owns a teacher's edition version. Can that be installed on multiple PCs? Or should we go ahead and order yet another copy of Office?

And while Im on software, what is the deal with Media Edition? Is it worth the upgrade from Home? She definitely doesnt need Professional.

Teacher is only good for one machine.

I hate media edition but then again I use my monitor and not tv as my screen.

Nah, I'd wait and see if its valid on different PCs.

Media Edition has some neat things. Since it offers more than Home, I'd get it.

I was giving the IT answer.

Yes you can only install it on one machine. If you try and install on multiple machines, angry green gremlins will jump out of your computer and feast on your ears.

I used to do tech support for Toshiba laptops. They're not bad but they always seem to be a bit behind in technology.

Didn't help any when a few years ago when Pentium 4 came out and they released a laptop with the desktop P4 in it to get a jump on the competition. It kept overheating and it would shut itself down randomly.

NOO no no. Dell Latitude's are overpriced pieces of fucking SHIT. The new latitudes got horrible ratings too. They are meant for business/road warriors anyways. Get this: its the same thing as the Inspiron 6400 which used to be the Inspiron 6000. Later on down the road you might want to put 2gb of ram in it which you can buy from Newegg for dirt cheap.

Teacher's edition of MS Office can be used on 3 machines. After that Microsquashes l337 ninja piracy squads hunt you down like a dog. j/k

Get media edition... Its a nice interface and if you buy from Dell's home section its the default operating system. XP Home blows.

Not true... Most MS Office and Teacher editions sold are good for use on 3 machines.
