Industrial Strength Router

Ok, I've been using WRT-54Gs for the last few years at home, and they seem to quit working after a while. This isn't suitable for me since I telecommute from home and need them up all the time.

Any networking types know of a good industrial strength router that I can plug in and forget about for years?

I've had decent luck with the Linksys but they seem to go belly up or start to get flaky after a while, which I'm tired of.

you can build a pretty decent router with freeware out of an old PC


that being said

I've got 2 routers at home, both linksys

a wrt54g for the wireless AP (it's not actually doing any routing)

and I've got a BEFSX41 for the actual router

i've had it for about 4 years now, and have had absolutely 0 issues with it. 13+ months uptime up on it atm

that being said, you can pick up old cisco 1700 and 2900 series routers for dirt cheap off ebay now adays


they're louder than a jet engine, but if you have an out of the way spot for them, they're good stuff

I'm just running the default firmware. A while back I played around with a variant on my previous WRT-54G but haven't this time around.

They work fine for a year or 18 months, then get flakier and flakier. I guess that's what one gets for a cheap piece of hardware.

I'd like something I can plug in and forget about.

You can find a 3600 for 2-300 bucks on Ebay, and I guarantee you that that'll be more router than you ever need. Given that I've seen a 3600 (fully tricked out, I grant you) handle BGP to 2 seperate ISPs at the same time, I guarantee there's not a damn thing you could throw at it in home use that would even make it hiccup. Given that multimillion dollar business depend on them for their entire livelyhood (WebEx used some 3600s), methinks it fits your requirement for "industrial strength". Of course, Configuration'll be a bit trickier, but hey... heh.

For home use, almost anything will work. Though I am guessing he is looking for something a bit more solid.

If you willing to put $$ into it, you could also consider a Juniper, 5 series I would think. Our network has Cisco and Juniper routers and is about as sold as you can get and is probably one of if not the most data intensensive networks (non military) in the world.

I actually have Cisco IOS manuals for when I was an IT Director, I can configure one given enough time and google searching.

The Juniper ones look good but seem very costly.

Juniper is really the only company that I think can compete with Cisco quality wise. We use the Juniper M20's as our border routers, and behind them we use Cisco 6500's

Netgear is my favorite commercial brand. If you keep your network homogenous with all Netgear brand equipment the stuff runs great.

seriously, stick dd-wrt on a wrt54g and you have almost all the functionality of a $3k cisco router

as for cisco

we're ripping out a huge portion of our cisco core (6509's, 7609's, some 12012's etc) and replacing them all with Alcatel boxes
