dumb question maybe, but here goes

How do you designate where you want the file to download torrents to?

I thought i'd found it, changed it, but it really didn't seem to make a difference

ie, files keep downloading to the default /my downloads, when i want it to dump to my big fileserver

oh, the reason i want to change it is that the partition it's dumping to is only 15 gb (just os basically) and I want it to dump to my 200gb ftp partition

You are using the single worst torrent program in the world... worse than Bitcomet even. You'll find all sorts of stupid bugs like that as you use it more and more. Azureus is a Java app even :ugh: .

uTorrent and never look back.

I've had no problem with Azureus, ever.

I tell it exactly where I want it to download to and always have been able to.

Azureus is the AOL of BT clients.

AOL users never report problems with it, they just don't know how green the grass is elsewhere. Nor do they hear 'us' giggling at them. :teehee:

Many people have Azureus on autoban so you can't even get the proper amount of seeds. Some torrent sites will even ban you if they see you using it, or other auto DHT clients.

I had really, really bad luck with Azureus, also. Anoter vote for uTorrent. It's what I use when I download anything.

I suppose I'll give uTorrent a try. I've just never had a need to use anything else *shrug*

I used some shitty few before it and then found Azureus and haven't switched since. I'll see how uTorrent is.

Hey, if it works for you, great. It locked up my PC often and its bandwidth throttle mechanism was dodgy for me. No need to switch if it does what you want, but it just didnt work for me.

uTorrent seems to have the exact same functionality as Azureus, I see no difference yet.

i found it easier to get setup

/shrug

i'd imagine that if you were familiar with both it would make no difference

but as a non-torrent person, utorrent was easier to get going

It's a huge system resource hog. I've seen some people complain about it consuming upwards of 250Mb of memory and taking 15-25% CPU time. That's ridiculous, especially for something as low-key as a freaking network client.

I've never experienced that personally. I would flip my shit if I saw anything close to those numbers.

ok, since i'm a n00b, explain some of this bit torrent shiznat to me

specifically, ratio, and availability

I assue ratio relates to the amount downloaded to amount uploaded, but what I want to know is who cares?

oh, and seeds and peers, what's the difference?

Ratio is very important with some places as they require you keep a ratio at a certain level, though many places it doesn't matter.

Seed - People who have the entire item you are trying to download and are only uploading
Peers - People who do not have the whole item and are still downloading.

oh, ok, neat

tho, if no one is seeding, it's possible that no one (even if there's 1500 peers) will ever get the whole item?

I have never fully downloaded a torrent when there were no seeds.

awesome

so unless the item I want is is the new cool current thing to file share, the chance of getting it off a torrent network is slim to none

not really, I have downloaded stuff that has been seeded for over a year. You would be amazed what some people are seeding.
