Really ODD issue

So... I get the ATI drivers installed in my Ubuntu install.

Got Doom 3 installed and working as well... but I noticed it was choppy... so I run glxgears to get an idea of my FPS.

First...

xxxxxx@Neo:~$ fglrxinfo
display: :0.0 screen: 0
OpenGL vendor string: ATI Technologies Inc.
OpenGL renderer string: RADEON 9600
OpenGL version string: 2.0.6334 (8.34.8)

So, looks like the drivers are good... it shows ATI and not MESA, which is a good thing.

I ran glxgears for a quick look and got:

xxxxxx@Neo:~$ glxgears
26620 frames in 5.0 seconds = 5323.895 FPS
42590 frames in 5.0 seconds = 8517.956 FPS
42589 frames in 5.0 seconds = 8517.666 FPS
42575 frames in 5.0 seconds = 8514.809 FPS
42485 frames in 5.0 seconds = 8496.885 FPS

Ok, looks good... but then I close the terminal window and reopen it... run glxgears again and was surprised to find:

xxxxxx@Neo:~$ glxgears
1370 frames in 5.0 seconds = 273.872 FPS
1321 frames in 5.0 seconds = 264.197 FPS
1305 frames in 5.0 seconds = 260.997 FPS

K... what the fuck? How do I lose some 8300FPS? Nothing was done between closing the terminal on the first run and the second run.

Ok... I did notice that when I run glxgears right after a reboot I get good FPS's -- it's when I run glxgears during computer use (after the initial check) that I find FPS of 200... which is terrible.

However, even with an FPS of 200... Doom 3 still loads and plays. Choppy yes, but not unplayable per say.

Um, your frames per second numbers look really screwy. Choppy video is below 30 fps. Ultra-high-end systems run modern games with the bells and whistles turned on at no more than 90ish. Even old crappy games they won't do more than a couple hundred. 5000 frames per second is a ridiculous number.

Look at Guru3D's review of the 8800 series. http://www.guru3d.com/article/Videocards/391/19/ (the whole thing is like 30 pages long, so I went straight to the results with FEAR) Even at only 1024x768, a 8800 GTX was only getting 150ish FPS. Something's wrong with your results.

LOL, 8500 FPS? At that point you're seeing the word "H-e-l-l-o" coming out of your mouth as you say it and time travel becomes possible.

Was there a difference between the size of the terminal windows you ran glxgears in. The 8000+ numbers from glxgears is not weird its normal, glxgears gives incredibly high results especially when rendering in a very small windows. If you run it in full screen you will get much lower results.
For to win one hundred victories in one hundred battles is not the acme of skill. To subdue the enemy without fighting is the acme of skill.
