Question for those who can answer wisely

Postby LostCause » Thu Oct 25, 2007 8:49 am

I currently run a Radeon 9800 pro. There is nothing wrong with that it does the job but a friend of mine is getting a 8800 and would let his Geforce 8600 GTS go for 50 bucks is it worth me getting it. Is it that much of a upgrade ?? Any Help would be nice thanks =D

Yes, grab that 8800 for $50. That's a deal and a huge upgrade over the 9800.

(make sure the slots are the same)

I am not sure that an 8800 is AGP, and if I recall 9800s were AGP only.

8600, not 8800

reading comprehension for the lose!

that being said, the rest is probably accurate

your 9800 is probably agp, and the 8600 will be pci-e, so you'd need a whole new rig just to use it

A thousand put toward a custom built pc will get you a near high end gaming rig.

A thousand spent at dell ect will give you an IE browser.

http://www.cyberpowerpc.com

Really is a good site, you can pick and choose pieces for your box and they offer some really nice stuff. Do you need a monitor? Do you need an OS installed?

As for the original question. Yes an 8600 would be a very nice upgrade from 9800. However, the 9800 is an AGP card and the 8600's only come in pci-e. This means that you would also need to replace your MB as well as your proc and ram. That being said, buy a new computer. If you can find out exactly what 8600 he has and if its SLI compatible (most are), build a new box with an 8600 GTS and SLI them (or try and find a place that you can buy a box without a video card). $50 for a 8600 GTS is a really good price. They generally run about $200.

Bullshit.

That may have been true a few years ago but not anymore.

You can get a nice machine with built in bullshit on board graphics for about $800 and then spend another $200 on a new video card. That $800 includes a 2 year onsite warranty which you won't get with a DIY solution. I've built PC's personally and professionally since there were PC's and it's just not worth it these days to continue when the level of quality has risen and the cost has fallen from Cyberpower, HP, Dell and the like.
