LCD screen

Postby brinstar » Sat Jan 19, 2008 6:31 pm

okay, so last weekend i bought a Gateway Profile 5 computer at a state surplus auction

yeah, it's fuckin' goofy lookin'

problem is, the 17" LCD screen is all wonky. after troubleshooting as much as possible (drivers & whatnot) i have decided that it is simply the screen itself. some areas of the display tend to repeat to the right of where they are supposed to be, which looks terrible. i did a livechat with a gateway CS person, and she wouldn't tell me anything beyond how to separate the panel from the base. i said "but the problem is in the screen itself, can you tell me how to replace that? or at least a part number so i can do it myself?" and she said replacing a screen is too complicated and i should not attempt to do this myself. she tried to get me to bring it in to a service center and pay some goon $344.95+tax to replace the screen.

fuck that, i said, so i proceeded to take the panel apart until i isolated the screen-- which i discovered to be an LG/Phillips screen, model number LM170E01(A5), and i can't find any replacement parts for less than a hundred bucks online. however, there is another brand called ECO that makes a screen with model number HT170E01(A5), and there is one on ebay right now for $25.

my question is: can i replace my crapped-out LM part with the HT part, or will it only work if it's an LM part? gut feeling says yes, so if i don't hear an overwhelming "NO, YOU HAVE TO USE THE LM PART!!!" from you guys, i'm gonna snap up the HT part before the auction ends in 5 days.

Are you afraid to lose $25 for the possibility of saving $75?

Upon further review and investigation into the matter, personally I would buy the ECO version first as that seems to be the same part directly from the manufacturer.

Also, are you certain it is the LCD itself that is bad & not the video card?

the rear connector, i discovered, is not actually connected to anything. you need a separate cord to connect it to the motherboard. lame!

lol i know it's fucked-up looking

it has a P4 3.0GHz cpu, dvd-rom drive, 1.5GB ram, and a 40gb hard drive

only cost me $220 at a state surplus auction, figured it would make a good school comp

plus, if i end up not liking it, i can ebay it for more than that (once the screen is replaced)
