weird bug with windows dir command?

the following is a result for doing "DIR TLD*.XML"
Notice the very first file should not match the filter.

X is mapped windows NTFS drive the command was run from an xp box
There were other files out there that began with "TLM" that did not show up in the directory listing.

Anyone have any idea as to what might cause this?

Volume in drive X has no label.

Can the mistake be duplicated from another XP box? how about on the server itself?

There are some ways to hard code environment variables that could cause this but I've never seen a problem as you've described (e.g. only 1 TLM file and not all TLM's)

Are there any indexing products running on the workstation?

If you force it to 8.3 naming convention, does it still fail?

Does a windows search using the same criteria expose the same flaw?

The xp box is the only machine on the remote network I have access too. Running this same thing on my work computer did not yield the same results, however the file location on the server drive share did make a difference as it didn't happen when the file was moved to a sub directory.

I didn't check for certain, but it is very likely windows search service is running, as well as an instance of SQL server

I thought about this last night, and it could be the cause however when this issue manifests its self, normally it's due to the way the name is truncated, dictated by file length. Since the same naming convention is followed for all TLM (and TLD) files, the name length is static and I would expect all the TLM files to show up if it were due to naming convention issues. I have not had a chance to test this, but I suspect this is where the oddity is coming from, but I am at a loss to explain exactly why that would be.

I didn't try this. The original problem and the cause of me looking at this was that a vb6 app was having issues reading in these xml files, it terminated on the first file (completely different schema). The list for the program to process was created inside the app via the Dir command, which was why I tried it from the command prompt to verify it wasn't a logic issue somewhere in the code that I was missing.
