Depending on the write speed I could see this becoming the new "tape". Optical backups are nothing new but 400GB per disc, that sure is!

I don't want to get into the politics behind backing the formats, or how craptastic of a job Sony has done in rolling out the format

but strictly in terms of raw format, I think this is an indication of the right choice being made

will the new discs be readable by the old players?

or will you have to buy "bluray 2.0" to read the big discs?

I'm just saying, this is a couple years away, will be even more expensive than the current technology and most likely will not work with current BR players. They still have a hard time with yields on dual layer disks. Good luck on getting those 16 layer disc prices down.

400gb disk is supposedly real (in a lab somewhere)

I dunno if you'll ever actually see them in the wild, but it bodes well that they can cram that much onto a disk
