thumb drive vs. external hard drive

I am grabbing an Ipad mini for a new comp (not looking for comments about this). I am wondering about buying a thumb drive for extra storage, which I prefer for size/portability and reduced risk of damage with a 3, 5, and 8 yr old running around my house.
I am wondering if a portable hard drive would be preferable. I get it would offer more storage, though I wonder if it would be worth my worry about moving parts and potential for failure if my kid gets a hold of it and drops it. Though, with a wireless hard drive I would be able to stream content to the ipad which would be nice.

I am looking for thoughts/suggestions/ideas I've missed in the comparison

Just get a network storage device?

Speaking honestly, I have a 16gb Nexus 7. I have yet to run into an issue with storage room.

What do you anticipate taking up so much room?

I think you need to do a wireless thing if you want external storage. Fuck ipads.

The cloud is the answer to your issue. You can't use external devices directly with any iPads.

I have Airvideo on my Linux server which is brilliant for streaming videos. I also share my docs locally via the same server. I use my ipad far more than my PC, personally and love it. To each their own, though.I do far more reading and casual browsing/emailing on the coach and the ipad is perfect for that for me.

Not sure everyone actually read the question before auto-complaining about apple's superior hardware, but i'd go with the wireless drive or the cloud as mentioned before. I personally like the physicality of storing data on a drive i can touch. I don't know shit about cloud tho. Can you access your apple cloud thru any device? Windows pc included ? Or is it just apple or things with itunes or what?

We sure he didn't mean a mac mini and just typed iPad?

Everything he's asking points to having a mac mini instead of a big box computer.

Which would make a LOT more sense in what he's asking for.

i typed Ipad mini - I was a bit fixated on size as i hate carrying shit around. i forgot about my Nook once i realized i could read books on my Nook app on my iphone...

and yeah, it seems the wireless hard drive would have been the way to go.

though, after talking with my friend, i realize that even though i don't hard core mmorpg anymore there will be plenty of instances where i will want proper chip speed/hard drive/ram combo, and i am gonna go with the smallest version of a laptop with an i5/7; 6-8g ram; 500gb+ hd for around $450-550, have found a few already

and yeah - the fact there's no usb on an ipad is ridiculous

It can function as a tablet or as a laptop. i5 processor, 4GB ram, 128GB SSD, Intel HD graphics. The optional keyboard attaches with magnets.

No shitty tablet OS. I can run all my Win apps on it just like a laptop.

but

it's a thousand bucks

without the keyboard

it's still big and heavy (unlike the windows RT surface)

an ultrabook with better stats is about the same price

what does this get you that an ultrabook doesn't?

It's smaller and can be used without a keyboard.

And the screen is nicer than any ultrabook I've seen in the same price range. Most are 1280x768. This is 1920x1080 and really, really nice.

Asus is about to come out with their own version of a Surface Pro that has both Windows 8 and Android.

Seems like a waste. There's already a great android emulator for windows.

It'll go the way of the Zune and MS Phones, I reckon.

It's a PC. Don't think they're going anywhere anytime soon. It runs Vanguard, all my music production and editing apps and works with all my midi controllers and audio interface, Photoshop with Wacom tablet sensitivity and every other Windows application. Not bad for a "tablet".
