USB Issue halp prz

Postby DangerPaul » Tue May 24, 2005 2:14 pm

I am trying to hook up a USB printer, I am guessing / assuming that its a USB2.0 port, but this is a pre-made computer at my mother's company, so I have no idea of the specs. The USB printer I bought is not USB2.0, so I may know the problem without anyone's help. But the error I am getting is "Unable to recognize USB device". I have followed the instructions, but it cannot detect the printer, it does not have a serial plug on the printer itself, so that is not an option.

So, if that error is related to the USB 2.0 thing, is there anything I can do to make it recognize a non-2.0 peripheral ?

first off what type of printer is it?

second if it is a fairly new printer unplug the printer first..run the cdrom when the program tells you to plug in the printer then plug it in. I know it sounds strange but alot of new USB printers have to have the cdrom install first.

if you have already tried this route sorry, i know it is a problem with alot of my users thats why I mentioned it.

Its a Epson Stylus Photo R200, and their website tech support is useless. I realized I am using a 2.0USB cable on it, I wonder if thats the issue.

I'm pretty sure USB 1.0 and 2.0 are interchangeable.

The install probably got hosed 1/2 way through. If you go to your device manager, do you see an "unknown USB device" or something of that nature? If there is, delete it and start the install again from scratch. Also, with device manager open, try pulling the USB cable out and putting it back in. If USB is working correctly, a new device should show up briefly before Windows figures out what it is. You can also try deleting the entire USB root hub and then doing a hardware scan to redetect and reinstall it.

It will not allow you to run the software first, it will pop-up and tell you that the printer needs to be connected for the software to install.

If you're running a legit copy of XP make sure you have SP2 installed.

I had the same problem with my USB port and a printer. That solved it amazingly enough. (I hate putting MS updates in with a passion, they seem to always fuck my shit up)

Have you been able to use other USB devices on that PC?

Check bios to make sure USB is enabled, that may or may not fix it.
