for a section champion, did you play or ?

I find it hard to believe someone who played would not think that *example of a third basemen throwing across to a first baseman *

Shifting bodyweight into a side lunge while extending the body, shifting body weight then pretty much doing a snatch and clean movment to get thhe body into throwing position while shifting weight and excellerating the arm / body to get the ball to 50 -60 mph and throw a ball 120 feet -- the first baseman shifting weight to do a box jump to catch an off throw extending the body coming down onto the ground and being balanced enough to get a foot on the bag, all this while someoen performs a 30 yard max sprint after hitting the ball.

No not all plays are like this, but the strain on the body of starting and going full speed is at times harder than ab asketball player running back and forth.
baseball is a very athletic sport, those that disagree have never trained at a high competative level - or have never really put forth the effort to try.

Yeah, Aaron hit 755 homers, which means he hit 715... since he's currently the only player to do so, you were referencing him, regardless of intent. As far as Ruth's athleticism goes, he did some amazing things regardless of excess body fat. Warren Sapp used to be pretty damn athletic, even though he was always a bit, umm... portly.

yea and i can do some great athletic things also.. doens't make me overall athletic... I could almost dunk at 5'10 and i never played basketball. I was one of the better swimmers in my area, was all-star little league, played competitive soccer (not just regular or select)... i don't consider myself athletic.

Warren Sapp had a crap load of muscle.. and there are always exceptions.

Mop... played some.. seeing as there was a MLB draftee (who ended up not playing baseball go figure) ahead of me kinda hard to get in to play

I also played Waterpolo (and was invited to the Junior National team camp)

your missing my point.. whats the total amount of moving in a game of baseball.. what 5 mins total out of 3 hours?

thats my point.

Its more athletic than golf.. not as athletic as tennis or soccer etc.

but i say baseball is more of a game of skill and thinking than a game of athletics.

There are guys like Bonds like 6 years ago who was amazin stealin bases playin outfield, hitting and all that.. but you put your most athletic baseball players up against football players and for the most part they can't compete.

And hittin i am sorry, is not athletic. Its timing and being smart. And knowing how to hit the ball for your postition (aka powerhitter, lead off slappy etc)

Well there is your skewed view. You are basing your opinion on if you were athletic as a kid compared to now. All star little league, teen aged competitive soccer, and almost being able to dunk at 5'10 is not much to be able to base an opinion on a baseball player being athletic or not.

Little league baseball is not even CLOSE to professional baseball or even college baseball. Hell High school baseball is garbage compared to college. The learning curve in baseball is HUGE from high school to college...and then college to the pros.

I would be interested in what you considered as being "athletic"

Lets consult mr webster....dictionary that is....

First on the list.....Athletic

ath·let·ic ( P ) Pronunciation Key (th-ltk)
adj.

1.Of or befitting athletics or athletes.

2. Characterized by or involving physical activity or exertion; active: an athletic lifestyle; an athletic child.

3.Physically strong and well-developed; muscular: an actor with an athletic build. See Synonyms at muscular.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
ath·leti·cal·ly adv.
ath·leti·cism (-lt-szm) n.

Hmmm seems to me that baseball players fit in to all 3 catagories for athletic.

Now on to Athelete!

A person possessing the natural or acquired traits, such as strength, agility, and endurance, that are necessary for physical exercise or sports, especially those performed in competitive contexts.

OMG what a surprise, that fits a baseball player perfectly. Escpecially the endurance part, what people dont understand is that it takes more out of the human body going from a still position, reacting to a ball, moving at full speed to a ball and making a play on the ball, then throwing to a base/back to the infeild, than constant running does.

And putting soccer above baseball? Please man, first off kicking a ball is very similiar to hitting a baseball. It takes hand eye coordination er foot coordination in this instance. There is actually very similiar movements in soccer and baseball, both are putting your body through essentially the same thing.

And for your little quote that there is 5 minutes of action in a 3 hour baseball game, i suggest you come out and play some baseball with me. Because if you think that all they do is stand around for 2 hours and 55 minutes, your wrong. Watching little league, or even high school ball is not the same as a real game, and what you see on TV is just a very small part of baseball. You dont see the guys constantly in motion for 3 hours, because the camera isnt focusing on them.

well being active.. means everyone in some capacity is athletic.

I played high school baseball and waterpolo, waterpolo was much more demanding. i said i don't doubt players are athletic... the amount of their ability used during the game isn't like soccer. Been to pro events for just about every sport, imo there are sports that are much more demanding during the game. Sorry i havn't played pro.. seeing as how i has my arm ripped outta my socket during a waterpolo game.. i can't do shit with my arm anymore

I mean i would agree for numbers of games played and traveling (which no matter who you are sucks) yea endurance makes sense.

i would be down for some baseball with ya... don't expect me to be able to throw anymore tho.. way too much pain when i do thats what happens with you have 4 screws in your shoulder hehe

We have state champs in PA for high school baseball...we should make a good run for the title this year. Our only weakness is our pitching, as we dont have depth, but we have great quality. 3 of our pitchers throw atleast 85.

my high school is the soccer and rugby school. Last year they were National Champions in soccer fall season (mythical) and rugby (true national title tourney)

they have i think 9 players on the Cal Bears rugby team (winners of 16 of 17 national titles in the last 17 years)

We used to have a damn good bastketball team in the early 90s (one national ranking with a 35-1 record and almost beat Oak Hill Academy when they had Jerry stackhouse and such) and in 99 and 00 (top 50 in the nation). They almost beat Mt. Zion Christian Academy also (while Tracy McGrady played there)

Just recently our football players have been recruited by big name schools.

our Xcountry team is (since i don't kno about other teams) i would say overall probably the best team (over the years) west of the mississippi and probably in the nation (something like 22 section, 9 state titles)
