Joe Theismann: Still Not Very Bright

Postby xaoshaen » Tue Aug 30, 2005 11:05 am

Joe Theismann on espn.com wrote:There are a couple of teams I think are going to surprise this year and the Arizona Cardinals are No. 1 on that list. They were very close to having a better record last season, but coach Dennis Green didn't seem to have a quarterback he trusted. That changes this season with the addition of Kurt Warner to the offense. There are some who feel Warner could be the comeback player of the year, but I believe he could be a strong MVP candidate because of the weapons surrounding him.
Rookie running back J.J. Arrington is looking good and will keep pressure off Warner and his cadre of stud receivers. It's hard not to be impressed with the amazing talent this team has at receiver with Anquan Boldin, Larry Fitzgerald and Bryant Johnson. This is easily the best corps of receivers Warner has had since his time with the St. Louis Rams when he was breaking NFL records and leading his team to back-to-back Super Bowls.

Emphasis added.

I dunno about MVP, but the Cards are a strong darkhorse candidate for the playoffs this year. As ridiculous as that sounds.

and btw Theisman is worse than Jerry Glanville was as a commentator.

and Jerry always fucked words up talking about Time outs:

"the 9ers have 2 sacks left"

hate him as much as Walton. For people that played the game they show their complete ignorance of the game today

I will never forget Glanville calling Billy Joe Tolliver a 'riverboat gambler' after he made a great throw in a game for the Saints. Riverboat Gambler. Lol.

I can't stand madden as a commentator
He comes across as a less literate Don Cherry

The guy who I really like now is Phil Simms
You know he knows the game, he's not that far removed from playing, but he doesn't come across like a loud mouthed braggart ala Boomer Esiason, Sterling Sharpe, Terrell Davis, etc etc

If Madden did every game I'd give up on football and watch soccer.

Terrel Davis kinda stutters and isn't that smooth and Shannon Sharpe is just stuck-up and horrible as a commentator.

I agree with Phil Simms, he's my favoite to watch. Him or Al Michaels

He said they were "very close to having a better record last season". Just like every single other team? Kurt Warner for MVP behind a mediocre offensive line?

I'd certaintly agree that the Cardinals have a shot at the playoffs, based off their schedule alone, but Theismann's comments were simply ridiculous.

Not anymore than his usual statements.

If the Cards had scraped out close wins against the 49ers, whom they lost to twice last year, they would've been 9-7, and they also were close to winning several other contets which I think was the gist behind his comments. Idiotic, probably. But I understood his meaning.

I have a hard time defending Joe, though. I really despise the ESPN crew of commentators completely and wish they'd fire them all and bring in someone of the caliber of Chris Berman or another.

We need another Don Meredith in the booth!

Almost every team in the league can make exactly the same claim, though. Even New England, if they hadn't made some inexcusable plays against Miami, could easily have had a better record than they actually did. Just about every team in the league lost at least one game that was entirely winnable.

There has to be a better alternative than Theismann out there...

Yeah, Theisman doesn't have enough mental energy to power a 10 watt bulb. That said, I do think the Cards may well vie for a playoff spot this year.

Al Michaels doing play by play and Phil Simms doing the commentary. That would be an excellent team. Maybe next year when ABC loses MNF.

I too like Troy Aikman, that is, when Chris Collinsworth isn't teamed with him. Collinsworth makes everyone suck.
