Draft order for non-playoff teams:

1. Houston
2. New Orleans
3. Tennessee
4. New York Jets
5. Green Bay
6/7. San Francisco/Oakland
8. Buffalo
9. Detroit
10. Arizona
11. St. Louis
12. Cleveland
13. Baltimore
14. Philadelphia
15. Atlanta
16. Miami
17. Minnesota
18. Dallas
19. San Diego
20. Kansas City

A coin flip will determine the 6th and 7th position between San Francisco and Oakland.

Fucking 49ers can't even lose properly. They'd have been 2nd or 3rd if they'd lost. Instead they're 7th. Good job, guys!

John York, please go die in a fire.

I'd rather my franchise be 7th, versus second or third. You'll get a quality player who won't eat nearly as much cap as a 1 or 2.

I like the Niner coaching staff and feel they are 2 years from being competitive with some decent player acquisitions.

Their coaching staff is OK, at least on first appearance, sure as hell is an upgrade over the last guy they had in there, but I don't think the 49ers are ever going to be competitive again so long as York is the owner. He tries to backstab people too much and there's entirely too much petty shit he does behind the scenes that undermines the coach's authority. Besides which, he's a skinflint, and won't ever shell out the $$$ necessary to get true top end free agents.

From one of our local columnists:
Nolan learned that the 49ers are in dire need of a seasoned NFL executive. He has made it quite clear in recent weeks that hiring such a person will be a top priority in the off-season. We'll see if he wins that battle with his owner.

And finally, he got a taste what many other employees of John York have learned over the years: that the boss is a meddler and can't always be trusted.

The Santa Rosa Press Democrat reported recently that York commissioned team consultant Harry Edwards to do a study on why the 49ers were so terrible on the road. Only problem is, he never told his coach about it. You know, the guy supposedly in charge of football operations.

Nolan was reportedly not happy at all when he heard about the proposed study. And he put a stop to it.

A small thing perhaps, but a fascinating one. York commissioned Edwards, one of the few remaining men brought in by Bill Walsh, whose expertise York has shunned. And York failed to tell his handpicked coach, leaving Nolan in the embarrassing spot of having to answer a reporter's questions without prior knowledge of the study.

Sure, Nolan has the right idea, but odds of him succeeding with York as an owner are much slimmer than if there was an actual competant owner involved, much less someone who ran the team like Eddie DeBartolo did in the 80s.

The Texans have the ability to position themselves for the next 5 years with this draft... at least 3 picks (maybe 4?) in the top 70..... they better not screw it up
