I want to learn about Football

Postby Jennay » Mon Jan 02, 2006 11:08 am

...but I don't want to bug any of my guy friends or annoy them by asking questions during a game. So what's a good game coming up to watch that will get me excited about Football, and so I can learn what the different plays mean and whatnot? I know the season is pretty much over but I'd like to know what teams to watch out for next season, maybe get into the College football thing over the NFL, and I'd like to know what's going on before I start picking what teams I like watching. Btw, I'm more of a hometown cheering girl, so of course I'm gonna like watching the Wolverines. The Lions are a different story though, I already know that I shouldn't root for them. They sux.

well apparently since you can only cheer for winning teams, but prefer home teams... i suggest you start watching basketball and hockey.

but you can learn everything about football by watching 1 game of football, the rest is just trying to remember the names of the 80 guys on the sidelines.

The best way to learn football, is to bug one of those guy friends of yours to tell you about it as it happens. At least, that is the road to the fastest results. You can do like I did (I had a single mother, no football fans in the house as a kid) I just watched a ton of it. Eventually it will come together.

The only things you will need explained is penalties for the most part.

Also - Don't be a front runner! Root for those damn lions until they win or cease to exist!

There are books out there that you can buy to learn about football.

Football for Dummies, (Second Edition) by Howie Long and John Czarnecki.

Snot Bubbles! A Football Primer for Moms, Wives & Significant Others 2nd Edition by Helma Clark.

The Chicks' Guide to Football : A Complete Guide to Tight Ends by Carol Stout

Get Your Own Damn Beer, I'm Watching the Game! : A Woman's Guide to Loving Pro Football by Holly Robinson Peete and Daniel Paisner.

The Girlfriend's Guide to Football by Teena Spencer and Chuck Brown.

Do not become a bandwagon jumper. Stick with your team through the hard times. Last season was very hard for me. :(

All I know is that I heard the Lions weren't even worth rooting for, but I can try. Afterall Detroit is hosting the Superbowl this coming year! I live about 30 miles north of all the chaos but I would love to get excited over something as monumental as having your nearest big city being chosen to host that. I think it'd be a shame if I didn't I guess.

I have no idea if UofM is good but I was always brought up to love them through spirit days at school and around my house. As for the books, a few months ago I rented the top two on that list and never got around to reading them.

I don't want to be one of those people who hates a team all season then suddenly likes them when they go to the playoffs, I want to be educated about the game itself, and root for my home team as much as I can. (Is there anything I can be proud of about Lions btw?)

Matt Millen. He is an expert on first round wide receivers.

GO UT!

Anyway, yeah, you need to sit with someone and have them explain it to you.... probably NOT during the Rose Bowl, cause you will just annoy them...

Get on the intrawebnet and find some sites that explain the basics like:

How many players on Offense and Defense
Player positions and what each players basic job is
The typical physical makeup of a player at each position
How to score points and first downs and how they work, etc. etc.
Mindia is seriously the greatest troll that has ever lived.

I suggest going into any search engine and typing "Rules of Football" I am sure one of the links provided could give you the answers you seek.

Joey Harrington doesn't catch anything. He's a Quarterback... which means he throws. Something has been lost in translation here!
