NBA.com's Power rankings......
TEAM (LAST WK) REC. BREAKDOWN
1 San Antonio (2)
6-1 Consistently excellent and they're making it look easy. The Spurs average 9.7 more points per game and dish 6.9 more assists per game than their opponents. At 22-14-3, TD is having another MVP-type season. Did you expect anything less?
2 Seattle (8)
8-1 They have won eight straight and if Ray Ray keeps playing this way -- he was Player of the Week -- Jamie Foxx'll star in a movie about him. On Tuesday, they became the first team in NBA history to shoot more 3's in a game (39) than 2's (38) in their win over Philly.
3 Phoenix (10)
6-2 If Stoudemire is helping pay Nash's salary, we wouldn't be surprised. No one has benefited more from Nash's arrival than Stoudemire. Amaré is third in scoring (27.6 ppg) and is shooting .567 from the field. It should be no shock, then, the Suns lead the NBA in scoring (106.0 ppg).
4 Dallas (6)
7-2 Went 3-1 on an East Coast swing before returning home and dropping a close one to the Suns. It should come as no surprise that the Mavericks are one of the top 3-point shooting teams in the league at .401. Meanwhile, Marquis Daniels has averaged 15.3 ppg in his four starts.
5 Utah (7)
6-2 How fluid and efficient is Jerry Sloan's Jazz offense? They're shooting .499 from the field. They're leading the NBA in assists per game at 25.3. And now Carlos Arroyo is back from injury. That assists per game number should go up.
6 Indiana (3)
6-2 The rap on the Pacers? Injuries. The flap about Artest. Silly, really. Indy has the best record in the East despite giving up more points per game (97.5) than they score (97.3). At 23-9 and 2.6 blocks per, Jermaine continues to show there are two worthy O'Neals in the East.
7 Minnesota (5)
4-3 KG, as usual, has been dominant (25-16-7). He also leads the Wolves in blocks (1.71 bpg) and steals (1.57 spg) but his teammates have been slow to catch on. But not to fret, the Big Bad Wolves started 4-3 last season and romped their way to the Western Conference Finals.
8 Detroit (1)
4-3 Has any defensive player in NBA history ever meant more to his team than Big Ben? This season, the Pistons are 4-1 with him and 0-2 without him and gave up an average of a 112.5 points in those two losses. Upon Big Ben's return, the Pistons held the Wolves to 85 -- and won
9 Miami (4)
6-3 Hey, this Shaq-D-Wade thing just might work, that is, if Wade can stay healthy. The Heat went 1-1 without Wade after he sprained an ankle and needed double OT to get that one win. Also, props to Haslem for pulling down 8.3 boards per.
10 Orlando (13)
5-3 Who's that guy wearing No. 33 and averaging 21-6-4? G-Hill's 32 points, five boards and five assists in O-Town's win over Utah on Wednesday is more than the Magic could have ever hoped for. Too bad there's no Comeback Player of the Year award.
11 Cleveland (20)
4-3 If only the first LBJ's second term was as successful as this LBJ. In only his second season -- he doesn't turn 20 until Dec. 30 -- LeBron leads the league in scoring (28.6 ppg) and leads the Cavaliers in every stat except for rebounding.
12 Sacramento (12)
4-4 After a scary 1-4 start, the Kings have reeled off three straight wins, including a gritty, gutty two-point win in Phoenix on Nov. 13. Again, Peja leads the team in scoring (19.3), but the usually accurate Peja has been unusually off the mark from the field (.419).
13 Philadelphia (23)
4-4 After dropping three in a row, the Sixers won three straight before dropping a game to the Sonics. The Answer has his best assists numbers (7.6 apg) since his rookie campaign in 1996-97. That's good, but A.I. is averaging a shade under five turnovers per game. That's bad.
14 Boston (21)
3-3 At 24.2 ppg, The Truth is slowly climbing his way back into the mid-20s scoring range and Ricky Davis has been excellent, shooting .521 and averaging 15.8 ppg. The C's face a brutal four-game stretch: Spurs and Sonics at home, Pacers and Sixers on the road.
15 L.A. Lakers (15)
5-4 As a solo artist, John Lennon wrote "Imagine." Paul McCartney, "Maybe I'm Amazed." Great songs, but they were better as a team in The Beatles. Despite pouring in 27.7 points per, Kobe's finding out that life could be better with Shaq. You decide who's Lennon and who's McCartney in this whole thing.
16 Milwaukee (16)
3-3 The highest scoring team in the East (101.0 ppg) will need all the points they can get on a four-game Western swing that begins on Nov. 19 in Portland. Guard Michael Redd continues to get better as he's pouring in 26.2 points per on .492 shooting from the field.
17 L.A. Clippers (19)
5-4 Lost the first of four battles for L.A. on Wednesday, but the Clippers have their head above .500 for the first time since Nov. 18, 2003, when they were 4-3. Maggette's having a career year (21-5-4), but he could bring up the field goal percentage (.431) a bit.
18 Washington (18)
4-4 It's tough to say a player has resurrected his game after winning the Sixth Man Award, but Jamison has had no problem assuming the role of the Wizards' alpha dog. 'Tawn leads the team in scoring (23.3 ppg) and rebounding (8.8 rpg).
19 Memphis (14)
3-5 Only loss in the past three games has been to the piping-hot Sonics. Think Bonzi was inspired to face his old Blazers' mates last week? Wells lit them up for 25 points in 30 minutes, his highest point total of the season.
20 Houston (11)
4-5 Have lost three of their last four. After missing two games with an injured hip, T-Mac still doesn't seem to be 100 percent. His numbers (20-5-5) are down across the board. The Rockets need to hit the glass more, as they're 29th in the league in rebounding (38.4 rpg).
21 Toronto (9)
4-5 And they started off so well. While Half-Walkman, Half-MP3 was told he couldn't wear his iPod during warm-ups, the Raptors dropped five of six on a nasty Western Swing. A pleasant surprise? Rafer Alston who's putting up career-best digits (15-4-6).
22 Denver (17)
3-5 They really, really, really miss Voshon Lenard's outside stroke. And after three straight ugly losses last week, 'Melo has helped the Nuggets rebound by averaging 30.7 ppg in his last three games. While aimless from the field (.369), 'Melo went 32-for-37 from the line
23 Portland (23)
3-4 Talk about steady. Randolph has the same scoring average this season (20.1 ppg) as he finished with last season all the while increasing his rebounds per game by nearly a board per. The Blazers have five tough games in the next nine days, three of which are on the road.
24 New York (22)
2-4 After losing in San Antonio on Wednesday, the Knicks still have to go through the rest of the Texas Triangle before they return to MSG. At 11 rebounds per and a shade under 10.0 ppg, power forward Kurt Thomas is still the Knicks' most underappreciated player.
25 Atlanta (30)
2-6 'Toine (22-9-4) and Al Harrington (17-7-3) are doing what the Hawks hoped they would, but Peja Drobnjak is the only other Hawk to average double digits (10.5 ppg). After meeting Utah on Nov. 20, Hawks don't face another team from the West until Dec. 8.
26 New Jersey (25)
2-6 How much do they miss Jason Kidd? The Nets average the fewest assists per game (16.8) in the league. J-Kidd's assists led to easy buckets. The Nets are second-to-last in field goal percentage at .389. They've averaged 71.6 points per in their last three games, all losses.
27 Golden State (29)
2-7 Sharp-shooting GM Chris Mullin may need to instruct because at .384 from the field, the lowest percentage in the NBA, these Warriors are missing their targets. Third-year guard Dunleavy Jr. has been consistent (13-5-3) and Troy Murphy looks good again (13-9-2).
28 Charlotte (28)
1-5 The better-than-expected Bobcats have thrown scares into Milwaukee (lost by two) and Utah (lost by two). Unfortunately, there are only W's and L's, not M's for moral victories. With the exception of missed free throws late, Keith Bogans had a nice debut (28-5-4).
29 Chicago (27)
0-6 Still young and still looking for their first win of the new season. Rookie Luol Deng is averaging 16.7 ppg off the bench. Somewhat interesting tidbit: No one has been named Rookie of the Year and Sixth Man in the same season.
30 New Orleans (26)
0-7 BD's back's hurt. He's out up to two weeks and no other player is averaging more than 14.3 ppg (Wesley). They're shooting .430 from the field as a team making the early part of their trip to the West only slightly better than the Donner party's.
Check out those sonics! TD and San Antonia ranked first...but their only loss of their season was too.........the sonics! Believer yet Vonk??
