Flutie could return

Doug Flutie's days with the San Diego Chargers may be numbered, but if the team releases him is Flutie headed back to New England?

According to a source, the Patriots [stats, news] had interest in signing Flutie if the Chargers released the 41-year-old quarterback after last season. That didn't happen, but Flutie may be cut this week and could get a call from the Patriots, who are looking for a veteran quarterback to back up Tom Brady [news]. New England has released Jim Miller, and Rohan Davey has struggled in the preseason.

Flutie is competing with Drew Brees for a spot on the Chargers. Philip Rivers, San Diego's top pick in the draft, has been impressive and could be the starting quarterback for the season-opener.

``I don't think they'll groom Rivers,'' said the source. ``They like him a lot.'' Cleo Lemon is slated to be the Chargers' third-string quarterback.
San Diego's decision may be financially motivated since they won't have to pay Flutie a six-figure bonus if he's not on the opening day roster. Flutie could also be traded.

I like Flutie... would rather have him than Bledsoe...

Why don't the Pats take Bledsoe back... take the curse off of us.
