The Banwaggon

Postby Diekan » Mon Jan 17, 2005 6:51 pm

Ok, had an interesting discussion with a friend about the definition of "bandwagon."

As far as I was always concerned a banwaggoner was one who changed teams year to year to favor who ever it was that happened to win the Super Bowl, the World Series, Stanley Cup whatever....

It seems though that most people believe that a banwaggoner is anyone who changes teams... I don't quite understand this. So, apparently once you select a team you can never change to a different, ever? LOL that's the stupidest thing I've heard in a long time.

So, what are the rules for changing teams? One can only change teams if the team of choice is having a losing season?

I've been a Buffalo fan for ohhh about 15 years or so, but I have to admit there are a lot of other teams out there that I follow as well - including NE. A lot of Buffalo fans have a love hate relationship with the Pats... we love them most of the time and hate them when they beat us (which is every year).

Then I hear a lot of guys talking about sticking to their team like it's a badge of honor. Who cares? I mean really? Why does everyone feel the need to justify their position with their team by pointing out that they were with them through thick and thin?

I was VERY tempted to buy a Pats hat the other day... but refrained. Not because I'm now suddenly a Pat's fan, but because I support them on their way to the Super Bowl and believe they will win it yet again. Everyone who knows me, knows I am a Bills fan, and thus getting caught in that hat would bring on much hazing.

Well all have our teams and we all have reasons for why we chose the teams we do - I just don't undestand the reason why it seems almost taboo to change your team at any given point in time.

If you're one who changes hats to match which ever team wins their respective championship then yes - you're a banwaggoner... however if you change teams for you own reasons - then I don't see why that's a *problem.*

Usually, a ''bandwagon'' jumper is one of changes his or her favorite team when their old team starts to suck, i.e. When a star player(s) leaves (i.e. San Francisco with Jerry Rice, TO, and Jeff Garcia leaving) or the team starts to suck altogether. I know a lot of bandwagon jumpers who used to love San Fran, but since last year, they root for other teams. :dunno:

I think people look on it as taboo because jumping to a team who is all of the sudden doing well allows said person to reap the "rewards" of pushing for the winning team.

I think it would cheapen it hardcore though if you were a bandwagoner.

I'll always be a Buckeye fan, always have since I can remember. When we won the National Championship in football, man I was ecstatic. No way I could have felt the same without having the history of being in the thick and thin with them.

Bandwagoners are pussies who crave attention and superiority with no regard for loyalty.

I root for the A's, Warriors, Steelers and Sharks. The first 3 since junior high and the sharks since they came into existence 12 years ago. I live in the San Jose area so 3 of the 4 teams are easily understand. The steelers i rooted for because when i was in jr high and high school, the raiders was the team everyone here rooted for and they acted like retards so i decided to root for their biggest rival at the time, the Steelers.

All the teams i root for have their up and down, especially the fucking warriors sans the run tmc era, i never thought of rooting for another team. As for the bandwagon, why do people care who other people root for? They can root for a different team each week and i wouldnt give a shit.

I root for the Saints. I will always root for the Saints. If I am unhappy with the Saints performance, and I suddenly start liking a successful team for no other reason than that they are successful, then I am a bandwagoner. But that will never happen.
You were right Tikker. We suck.

i still root for the 9ers eventho i don't care as much as i did.. more of a protest of York than anything else. I root for the steelers when they are in the playoffs since my cousin Joe is a big fan.. its kinda a thing to pull the family together.

I was a bulls fan till MJ retired and krause kinda screwed the franchise. Was a kings fan (since it was the home team where i live) since the 92-93 season (so was cheering for them when they sucked also)

I do cheer for individual players.

NFL... Jerry Rice, Tony Gonzales, local guys that made the NFL (Ontario Smith, soon to be Jared Siegel)

NBA... KG, Ray Allen (probably my most favorite player in the NBA also semi local guy), Jeff Foster (hard worker), Matt Barnes (Local Guy, watched him play in high school a few times)

College Football... USC and Cal (Local and state teams so have to cheer for them), Miami when Dorsey was there....... i just love watchin College football cause its alot like high scchool.. alot of scoring, Parris Warren (Local Guy), Jared Siegel (went to my high school), and a few others from local and a couple from my high school

College Bball... Duke and NC (yea wierd but like college football), mostly individual players
