Look like the Detroit Pistons will be looking for a new coach.

NY Daily News wrote:New York – Isiah Thomas' courtship of Larry Brown began last night, almost immediately after the coach and the Detroit Pistons reached a buy-out agreement that will allow Brown to coach the Knicks or any other team next season.
The Knicks' president is expected to meet with the Hall of Fame coach as soon as tomorrow and is prepared to offer Brown a five-year contract worth between $50 million and $60 million, which would make him the highest-paid coach in NBA history. The Knicks are optimistic that they could have a deal in place by next week.

I thought Brown has medical problems and that's why he is not going to coach anymore. Why would Brown go from coaching a team like the Pistons to a crappy ass team like the knicks?

Phil Jackson is making 10 milion dollars/year with the lakers.

There's a very limited pool of professional calibre coaching talent... witness Rick Pitino. Hiring an unproven coach can net you someone like Isaiah Thomas who can utterly destroy your team's season. Of course, it could be worse: you could hire him as a GM so he could destroy your team's foreseeable future.

But why give him a five or six year deal, when he will leave in two?

Brown is smart. He knows that he got Thomas by the nuts so he ask for a long term contract. When he quit after 2 or 3 years, he can just sit back and collect the money or force the knicks to buy him out like the Pistons. Either way it's a win for him.

If he quits, he doesn't continue to collect on the contract. The only way he gets paid to not coach is if he manages to annoy the management to the degree that they're willing to pay him to make him go away.
