I disagree with that statement 100%. A bear tanks much better than a cat which DPSes better than a strider, etc.
There's certainly a difference. And in PVP, it's even more noticeable with spell interrupts on fast attack speed pets.
All pets are NOT created equal.

They have slight difference, but none that would make it worth it to keep multiple pets and use the situationally. My cat works just fine for tanking, the bear I had did just fine in DPS. If your looking for a DPS boost get a beter gun/bow, if your looking for beter tanking get more int gear for heals or get a better gun/bow and kill the mob faster.
