I'll say it's possible I am jaded, but in my opinion the gaming industry has somewhat hit a wall and is moreso regurgitating concepts and doing less with more, versus the opposite which we saw in earlier games.

I love the Total War series, Farcry, Thief, etc, but none of them are revolutionary, just small gains that do not change the landscape at all.

WOW is the same way. While it improved on many facets, it is a traditional MMO and not revolutionary at all.

This is the way it's always been. Any innovative game starts a cycle of variation and improvement. By the very nature of game design, there must always be more adaptation than innovation. I notice you didn't mention Pirates, Dawn of War, or Freedom Force, all of which were examples of the latter.

I own Pirates which is damn good, but not revolutionary. I played the Demo of Dawn of War, and the only thing that really wowed me was the Intro. The gameplay was not at all revolutionary.

I'm not arguing there aren't great games out right now, just nothing revolutionary or vastly different from what I've already played. In the MMO realm it's pure stagnation.

There have only ever been a handful of revolutionary games created. I'll settle for innovative, which I would argue Pirates definitely is.

It may be my limited experience, but I've not played any other RTS with requisition based entirely on tactical and strategic map control. Finally eliminating the peon system was fantastic and completely altered the traditional game flow. Toss in some squad-based combat, a morale system, and the combined arms emphasis and you've got a game that plays completely unlike any RTS I've ever encountered. It's too early to call it revolutionary, as it hasn't been out long enough for other developers to imitate, but it's certaintly innovative.

No arguments on the MMO front. I do think that WoW has largely peaked the current cycle of adaptation. With any luck developers will have to begin branching out rather than refining the current model if they hope to garner any real marketshare with the next generation of MMOs.

If you want to check out a really cool game, pick up Tactics Ogre

It's harder than fuck, and a million times better than the Final Fantasy Tactics ripoff

Pirates is fun...although easy. I had the #1 pirate's ship beat by my little 6 cannon boat within the first 3 hours of the game.

Well, part of the problem is the games we are playing are SSDD. Nothing new and captivating. WOW is brilliant but not revolutionary. FPS' are done and quick fixes. RTS are the same thing really and nothing more can be done with them. MMOs are not advancing really at all.

My gaming has dropped tremendously over thelast two years, and I seem to be reading more and doing less on the PC.

Eight years ago I could dump 12 hours into EQ without a second thought in a night. Now, I can't even play 12 hours a week of multiple games.
Years before that, I could easily spend a friday night buried in Might & Magic. I think the industry has taken a turn for the worse and games are just copies of what we've already seen with better graphics and less soul. The fun quotient on the games coming out now can't compare with the games before, even if they are much grander productions.

Blizzard spent the 1st 9 months getting their overpopulated game under control. I really think we'll start seeing new content come in a bit faster now that server stability is mostly a non issue. Zul'Gurub and a new 15-15 BG to come out soon. I'm actually excited since farming for fire resist gear is about as fun as eating lint atm...

Kudos to them for instance limits. Fuck the bleeding hollow farmers!
