How accurate are the calories counters on the exercise machines? How do they compute those?

they are boosted by companies so that people will 'like their equipment, as much as 60 -70% YOu should try a heart rate monitor if you are looking for acurate calorie count

Yeah, they can't be very accurate at all. Take two people who weight the same, but have two completely different builds... they won't burn the same amount of calories.

The only "reading" I ever pay attention to is the distance - other than that /shrug.

As an example on my heart rate monitor today I did 30 min arc trainer and it said I did 650 calories burned acording to my hr monitor it was at 475
