High blood pressure (hypertension)

Postby Harrison » Mon Jun 27, 2005 10:57 am

Besides reducing stress...which I can't exactly control just yet.

What are some good ways to reduce your blood pressure?

Fruits/Vegetables -Check
30 minutes + of excercise daily or at least every other -check

I'm not too informed on it and I need help if anyone knows more. (I know we have some nurses etc. here)

I have a BP of 177/110. Or so the automated machine said...so it might have been incorrect...
How do you like this spoiler, motherfucker? -Lyion

Cut way down on salt and sugar and caffiene.

See a doctor.
Inside each person lives two wolves. One is loyal, kind, respectful, humble and open to the mystery of life. The other is greedy, jealous, hateful, afraid and blind to the wonders of life. They are in battle for your spirit. The one who wins is the one you feed.

I have high blood pressure. I'm supposed to go check it every once in awhile, like in Walgreens or something, but I havent because I dont want to take pills.

Go to a doctor, he will tell you the same thing, check it for a couple weeks, if there are 3 high numbers, come back and he/she will put you on BP medication.

That is high enough that you you would need BP Medication if the result is repeated and you continue to have the same numbers. You should be monitoring iand then getting back to your Dr. Many physicians will say if you get that reading or around it three times they will put you on meds. Hypertension left untreated can damage blood vessels and organs, including the heart, kidneys, eyes, and brain. It isn't something you want to mess with.

Yes - eating a good diet, laying of the salt, laying off the caffine, exercise, not smoking, maintaining a healthy weight, can help a ton. Genetics can also be a contributing factor. Sometimes people who do everything right still need medication to get the BP under control.

ohhh man, i used to have really high blood pressure.... that was actually one of the things that jumpstarted my diet originally. it was consistently scary-high, but now it's in the middle of the "normal" range, even a little on the low side. big relief, let me tell you.

some sort of heart trouble is apparently present in my family--i don't remember what it is, but alex i think knows the name of it--and so my BP readings, as well as a persistant random arrhythmia thing my heart likes to do, kind of scared me into diet and exercise.

i feel much better now, the readings are lower, and the arrhythmia is becoming less and less frequent (though not completely gone, and there's still standing-up dizziness from time to time :/). i think i'm doin okay.
