Having another friend there with you isn't going to help much in the case of animal attacks.
I've travelled cross-country solo driving a few times; not quite the same, but it did help somewhat.
Plan stops ahead of time. Check in points if you will. Give yourself some leeway and if you don't make it there in time, make that phone call. If you get there ahead of time, let people know and move along to your next target.
An easy way to accomplish this would be to have someone reliable to call who could help arrange emergency shit if needed in any given part of the country and also keep a blog (sad as it sounds). Encourage friends and family to read that blog and add to it at regular intervals.
