How to learn self defense?

I bit the bullet and got a gym membership and go three times a week. Every time I go I start off with a 40 minute walk on a tred mill that changes incline every minute or so, then after that I do different arm and ab work outs.

Anyway, I've started to notice that I actually am starting to have muscles, which can be a good thing and a bad thing... good thing is that no one will try to rob me or anything, bad thing is some guys might actually want to test me, which has happened before with bad results for me.

Now for the point of the thread: Whats the best way to learn self defense that could be entwined with a bi-daily workout?

Um well I would suggest if it is that big of a problem I would try and get into a real class.

Take Boxing, great cardio and will help if you get in the fight unlike kung-phooee

Altho, if you can't talk your way out of a fight that is based on "I actually am starting to have muscles... some guys might actually want to test me" you ether in High School or live on a difrent planet

Boxing would be good if you wanted something to do IN the gym. Take Kung Fu at an actual school if you want self defense. There are actual self defense classes (i think) or you can go for the gold and take the classes. You'd learn blocks and how to take someone down in seconds.

I used to do kickboxing and it was a great workout, and you learn self defense!

Point in Kung Fu is not to fight. Thats the point in any martial art. You dont use to it fight, you use it to evade and pin. If he is getting picked on in school, he uses it until a teacher comes to break it up. Schools here will suspend you, even if you hit out of self defense. Do the blocking shit and they cant get you in trouble.

If you're up north you might be able to find a wrestling club... (not that professional shit). If not give boxing a try. Martial Arts are a joke (IMO) sorry to those of you who love it... I've never seen ANYONE use it and win a fight... looks great on the big screen, but in real life most fights end up on the ground.

seriously, the best thing I could tell you is find a good amrtial arts class.
If you want a really good work out try Kempo. nothing like wearing armourer scurrying in a squat position and swinging a heavy ass sword around

Kung Fu, if you learn it from a good school is extremely effective. However you would either need to take it for a very long time or have extreme dedication to it for a while to be of any use at all. If you went that route dont expect to do any of the BS you see on TV or in the movies. Its all just that BS. The real thing is dirty and hard.

If you are just looking for something that is a good workout and that is useful. Kickboxing is the way to go. Its a great workout and is useful.

I've studied kung fu and I totally disagree on its real life effectiveness. I think the average boxer would tear a kung fu guy apart in a street fight.

I have studied it, I have taught it, I have used it. It works extremely well, if not too well for protecting yourself. I will admit that the grappling that we teach is the most effective of everything. We did also see the effectivness of kickboxing and I tought that as well.

I already said, get into about 300 fights. First, it toughens you up, second its a good workout, and third, if you fight that many times, you naturally become a badass irl.

Yep... that was how the Marine Corps did it... They put you in a ring before they teach you anything.

I had plenty of students who were "kungfu badasses" too... They got their shit wrecked in the ring every damn time whether it was against a boxer or grappler. Kungfu was designed hundreds of years ago and is still the same. The street fighter has been advancing way past that ever since.
