It isn't all that strange really. I mean it is fucked up and all but folks do all sorts of silly shit for "god".

Look at the out-of-wack southern babtists and such that play with snakes or bite off chicken heads.

These folks have been around a lot longer than the wierded out USA folks, so over all that time they've had the chance to get more mental screwed.

I don't think self inflicting or "suffering" in the name of god is really all that strange. It is all a matter of degrees and what one person thinks is sane is another persons insanity.

BTW didn't watch the flick but skimmed over the article. I saw a report like this on Discovery or something a few years back.

They're hardly alone in the practice. Hell, Opus Dei (the real organization, not the sinister fictional invention by Brown) are big time into self-flagellation as a means for getting closer to God, and whip themselves bloody on a regular basis.

So, while it's certainly a disturbing practice, don't for a minute pretend that Islam has a lock on the practice. It's quite widespread in Christianity as well, albeit not as much as it used to be back a few hundred years ago.

I'll agree with that to a point. I find any form of self mutilation in the name of religion (or for that matter any other reason) odd and disturbing, the idea in and of it's self is not limited to Islam. If someone however finds what they are looking for spiritually in bloodying themselves... well more power to them I guess.

What I do take issue with and what does bother me are two things. The first is the inclusion of children in the practice. If as an adult you want to bloody yourself up for a religious experience, that is your prerogative, but you shouldn't include children in the practice, especially babies. Some things are only for adults and not for children, I feel this is one of them.

The second is the apparent religious frenzy surrounding this, and the outlet that that frenzy has taken in some cases. I guess in Cairo these sorts of celebrations have been particularly problematic where that spiritual high if you will has resulted in gangs of animalistic thugs beating and raping any woman unfortunate enough to cross their paths. The video shows almost a militant frenzy, that suggests not an internal personal spiritual reflection and experience but an outwardly aggressive one.

I agree, it's not really much of a concern except that the young children are involved. they should make it so that you have to be 16 before you can cut your own head, and you should have to do it to yourself and not other people.

even still, I'm glad I'm not the kind of person that can mutilate myself that way.

I christian flavor of this religion fails me just now but my uncle used to be a part time preacher at his church. It was one of those, cripple folks healed to walk again type places. I spent that night at my cousins house and went to this church the next day.

These people, mentally, entered some state of a euphoric trance almost, talking in "tounges" (baby talk if you ask me), and doing all kinds of wierd shit.

Point being is entire families were doing it, kids, parents alike. Freedom of religion is something we are founded upon and even if this is to an extent abusive, they should still be free to do it. Folks do this shit in our country already. So long as they don't kill people, I think they should be able to do whatever they want in the name of their religion.

Over time these type folks will be ostrizied(sp) and the practice will fade into the farther corners of the religion. I feel sometimes that places like Iraq are 50-60 years behind the evelutionary standard of the world (if that makes any sense).
