When a thief is going to break in and they have to go through extra effort to deal with the lock, you'll see an increase in destruction.

Rather than lock my doors, I don't leave valuables in my truck and to steal my truck, they'd need a hell of a lot more than simply getting inside because my alarm system disables my starter (which I do engage).

It isn't foolproof, but it prevents theft & it keeps my insurance valid if my truck is stolen.

You aren't given the right to fly, it's a privilege. You could always drive, take a bus, etc. as long as we're not talking intercontinental here.

If you don't want someone looking at your little pecker, don't fail the metal detector test.

Damn airport security, one time in Cleveland I wasnt thinking and left my carry-on sittin in the chair at the terminal and went down the hall to get some food. Came back to find dozens of cops and security and dogs and all kinds of shit. Sucks because they completely searched my bag and made me miss my flight. But oh well, I should have been thinking.

If it stops just 1 terrorist......would it be overkill or unnecessary then?

Imho if it deters, or catches just 1 person it would be well worth my time, tax payers dollars, and the incovenience.

I think it's incredibly naive to think that any of this crazy security is going to stop any potential terrorists. As I said before, these people that we're trying to stop are not afraid to die. They are not afraid to make any ultimate sacrifices. They will find a way for their purpose if they want to find a way. As much planning as they've put into the things they've done in the past, some little dinky scanner or extra security check in the airport will simply be a minor inconvenience for them at worst.

How the hell is what i said, Naive? Did i say "oh this will stop all those damn terrorists!" That would be Naive.

There is the possibility that this can deter, or catch someone that slips up. That is not naive to say at all.

well you said if it catches just one person - I'm just of the opinion that it won't catch any of the people it's aimed toward, but rather be more like it's always been and catch your typical innocent smoker who has a lighter in his pocket or a girl who forgot to put her lip gloss in her checked baggage.

You carry some fucking big lip gloss if it is over 3 oz and cant fit into the baggie.
And if you get a female checker, and have something like say, Proactive, that you forgot to check how much it was and couldnt fit it in your checked bag and stuffed it in a baggy in your carry on, they know how expensive it is, they feel bad about telling you to toss it and will play the "best judgement" card and let you take it. Also helps if youre going through security at the time that your plane is supposed to board...
Anyway, I dont mind security. I dont mind this new scanner. If we're making it harder for terrorists to blow my ass up in a plane and we are delaying their plans, good on us, keep it up. It really isnt that much of a hassle...well, except that I really hate tieing my shoes or walking on a public floor, even a little bit, in socks.

The 3 oz change is fairly recent - when I flew in September I saw a girl in front of me lose a 60 dollar bottle of perfume and a bottle of that expensive aveda lotion; completely ruined her day.

I really don't undersatnd the plastic baggy thing. This last flight I took the guy put my lotion in a plastic baggy and then just threw it back in my purse, it isn't like I had to carry it separate.. so really why even put it in the plastic? There may be some secret security powers of a ziploc that I don't know, but I really don't understand what putting it in plastic and putting it back in the original bag it was in is going to do.

In all actuallity, yeah that is probably 99% of what it will deter. But as i said, IF one person is caught then it will all be worth it. Second, if it makes one more hoop for them to jump through, fantastic! It makes it harder for them to get to the plane.

With as sophisticated as some of the bombs are getting, and triggers for the bombs they can be smuggled onto a plane by multiple participants in parts no bigger than a lighter. If something like that shows up on the X ray, without that one piece, the plane doesnt blow up.

Again thats a stretch, but not out of the realm of possibility at all.

I certainly dont believe that this one machine is the end all be all of security at the airport. I do not believe that all of the sudden terrorists with give up on airports because of this machine.

I DO believe though, that it has the potential to catch some of the more daring, or stupid terrorists that attempt to smuggle something onto the plane via their bodies. Again, Potential.

While you say that these are people that spend years planning an attack. You are right, however not ALL of them plan for years. Some are thrown together at the last instance. Ill trade 5 minutes of my time, for the possibility of stopping (in one form or another) a terrorist. Catching a terrorist in the act is not the only way of stopping a terrorist.

This machine does sure beat getting felt up at the airport in front of people though. I have a steel plate in my leg with screws that sets off some metal detectors. I am tired of hell having Bubba from TSA copping a feel, without dinner and a movie first.

When I fly with the kiddos, I put the baby in a sling, like a little kangaroo pouch. If he is sleeping there is no way in hell I will take him out of it, I'll refuse to take it off and ask to be manhandled so the can check to make sure there is nothing on me or in the little pouch, other than a sleeping baby. If there were a machine that could allow me to do this without them feeling my boobies, I'm for it.
I try to drive where I need to go these days. I hat flying, it makes me woosie so I have to drug up before I do, Im scared of the planes engines just falling off or some other catostrophic failure that will kill me, and with recent events, scared of an angry suicidal passanger or terrorist, because I am totally conviced it will be *my* plane. But if I am on time limits or the drive just isnt possible (like in a ratty old neon) I'll fly. Like this weekend. I'm scared.

Which is exactly why we need to stay one step ahead of the terrorists at all times. Force them to think for another ten years about how they're going to get through security, and by that time we'll have new technologies that will force them to think for another ten years.

With your logic we should just take away all security and let them walk right on the plane. Hell.. they're going to get on anyways right?

Gypsiyee some of the security measures are just feel good bullshit, in short it makes people feel safe and secure. I have to take my laptop out of it's bag, yet my xbox360 which has essentially the same electronic components of a computer can stay in it's bag. I've even had TSA people ask me if there was a laptop in a bag when they saw it. The illogical contradictions are mainly due to procedures and protocols, rules that are in place and not deviated from as a protection from political correctness and self important assholes (on both sides of the security counter).

If TSA agents were allowed a significant amount of lee-way to make decisions based on common sense and logic there would be those that would abuse "power" and those flying who would pitch a fit because they were discriminated against or lack of consistency. Bending the rules as with Darcler's situation can cause problems, as the next time she goes through security if she were the type of person she could bitch because a previous TSA agent allowed her through with something that another TSA agent wont.

A coworker of mine was asked to help a bag into the scanner by one TSA agent only to be drilled by that agents supervisor for doing what was asked (the original agent was suddenly busy with his back turned). I've been bitched at for not turning around as asked after being told to watch someone going through my bag (I don't have eyes in the back of my head despite some peoples assertions).

You are right in that the odds are not good that TSA will catch a determined terrorist or group of terrorists attempting something. There is however no reason that because the odds aren't good that we should drop them to an absolute zero. When faced with seemingly insurmountable odds I don't give up, I still "play to win" and seek to change the odds. I expect airport security to operate under the same line of thinking. When faced with a 5 percent chance of success would you do nothing and make it a 0 percent chance?

Frankly I really wish there was some type of program that one could apply for that would allow you to pass through a quicker and more lax security process. I'd gladly pay a yearly fee for something like this, and I'm quite sure I would pass any security clearance and background check as I have in the past for things that were much more sensitive then getting on a commercial air craft. This is very unlikely to happen though because of the social political climate and fear of accusation of discrimination.

What has cracked me up the last couple times I've travelled is my external hard drive. I just wrap the power cords around everything else and toss it in my backpack. Nobody ever asks a goddamn thing about the external HD... it is a smallish metal box with wires all the fuck over the place and I'm sure the X-ray doesn't reveal a hell of a lot about it.

I am certain that someone could build something and put it inside an external HD enclosure and take it right on in.

In my more twisted thoughts I've thought about gluing strips of lead spelling "BOOM" onto a piece of cardboard in a bag... cavity searches and prison aren't my cup of tea though.
