Matrix is near?

Postby Ganzo » Tue Apr 24, 2007 6:46 am

Scientist at the University of Texas have developed a nanobot-size fuel cell that produces electricity directly from the glucose-oxygen reaction in human blood. Called a "vampire-bot" by commentators, the cell produces electricity sufficient to power conventional electronics and could be used for future blood-borne nanobots. Japanese scientist pursuing a similar project estimated that their system had the theoretical potential to produce a peak of one hundred watts from the blood of one person, although implantable devices would use far less.

They're saying it's for the good of implantable devices, but i can see so many ways of misusing this technology.

Any tech really, Ganzo. Look at nuclear energy, cloning, Gene Therapy...

Yeah this doesnt give me that warm fuzzy feeling at all.

Would be an amazing breakthrough, and great power source. However the miss use of this would be horrible.

Yeah, but the potential benefits are huge too. Think about it: actual powered prosthetic limbs, so that people who've had amputations can really function again almost completely normally. Pacemakers that never need to be removed and replaced cause of the battery running out.

Not to mention, Ralf would have loved it, as it would be one step further on his path of becoming a Combat Cyborg...

I certainly don't discount the benefits that this could have, there are many. However the alternate uses are what makes me "squeamish"

What are the malevolent alternative uses?

Well it certainly would be a good replacement for RFID chips for starters.

As RFID in people? or do you mean along the manufactureing line? I'm not sure how they could use this technology void of a person.

Pretty much, there would be some issues to overcome. Antenna would be the first thing to come to mind, size would be the second.

Well you wouldn't do it with just one nanobot, but several thousand of them working together would work.

Include it in standard immunizations, and now big brother can track everyone!!!

Yeah but doesn't that seem a bit overboard.

For feasability though, your body is an antenna so I doubt you'd even need one at all. Just enough bots to make a circuit with some logic.

Wouldn't that be an awesome system to hack after it is implemented? I mean you could probably find a way to mind control or push a button to buckle people over in pain, the power would be undeniable.

The difficulty would be the fact that nanobots would degrade within a matter of days at best.
